10 Reasons to go Biking in Bali│If you are planning a trip to Bali – or maybe just day-dreaming about a trip to Bali – then you need to add BIKING to your list of activities to do while you are on this amazing island. We have many more recommendations on what to do in Bali, but for now, let’s look at why this particular activity is an absolute MUST-DO. Here are 10 Reasons to go Biking in Bali…
1. COVER LARGER DISTANCES.
If you’re an avid traveler then you know all too well how much walking is often done on vacation. Unless you plan an exclusive beach getaway, there is always a lot to see, and most of it is done on foot. Sightseeing on foot is great, but on bicycle you can cover further distances in less time.
2. GET A GREAT WORKOUT!
I can’t speak for the super diligent – you know, the ones who take their yoga mat on vacation with them! I have to admit I would love to be one of those folks, but so far, I just haven’t been able to achieve that. Most of us fall out routine, consume way too much food, and other than walking, don’t do much exercise at all while away on vacation. A morning of biking through valleys and up steep hills gives you a GREAT workout!
3. MANY COMPANIES.
There are many biking companies. Ask around, and in no time you’ll be able to see which ones are the best of you. Your guest house will have pamphlets, and there will be notices up around town. If you keep your eyes open, you’ll notice these companies returning with vans of tourists and bicycles loaded on the back of their vehicles, around midday and the dinner time.
4. EVERYTHING IS PROVIDED.
The biking companies will pick you up from your guest house, do a stop at another attraction, provide bicycles, helmets, water, sometimes even a snack or two, and a meal. When choosing a company, make sure that they provide all of this. After your biking adventure, they will take you back to your guest house again.
5. FRIENDLY TOUR GUIDES.
On almost every tour that we do, we immediately like our tour guide. This is especially true in Asia. They are usually really sweet and caring, or just plain funny, providing constant entertainment. Our biking guide was completely in love with our son, and very eager to make sure that we were all happy, comfortable and having fun.
6. PERSONAL TIME WITH A LOCAL.
Another big plus to these tour guides is that they are almost always a local. What this means is that while you are on the tour, you often learn a lot of interesting information. The guides will stop and talk to other locals, and often translate for you if there is anything that you would like to ask.
7. IT IS A FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITY.
Most biking companies in Bali offer the option of a baby seat on the back of one or both of the bikes that you hire. There is a slight increase in price for bring a child along, but it really isn’t much at all. What could be better than an active, exciting adventure that you can take the kids on too? Our son loved being on the back of the bicycle while we drove through villages and farms. NOTE: A toddler helmet was provided for little man, but he protested until we gave up trying to keep it on his head.
8. SEE THE LOCAL DAILY LIFE.
One of the most interesting things about our biking in Bali adventure was the locals that we got to see. Of course, we weren’t the first tourists riding through their villages, but they were still really friendly and happy to see us. All of the kids would wave excitedly as we rode by! It was a real pleasure to see men working, women working on crafts, and children walking to school. This is a good way to get a glimpse of local life without intruding too much.
9. ESCAPE THE CROWDS.
Although we did see a couple of other groups, we really felt removed from the busy-atmopshere that can be found in Ubud and other big Bali cities. It felt like we were seeing the real-Bali, and that there were barely any other people on the island. It was magic!
20. ENJOY A TRADITIONAL BALINESE MEAL.
After a few hours of biking, we had certainly worked up an appetite. The last part of our biking-package included a lunch at a local Balinese home. This was really a great way to end of our experience, and we highly recommend that you choose a company that provides this (included in the price, of course).
