10 Reasons Why You Need to Visit Tolmin Gorge
Tolmin Gorge is situated in the southern region of the Triglav National Park, in north-western Slovenia. We found pictures of this gorgeous little country while searching for European Road Trip ideas on Pinterest. When I saw the color of the waters in Slovenia, I knew that we had to try and squeeze in a visit. Due to the close proximity of Slovenia to Austria, we were able to leave Eli with our friends (The Klugs) so that we could do some adventure and water sports. We considered this our one (and only) international date opportunity! Check out some of the awesome things that we did:
Tolmin Gorge is one kilometer long, between 5-10 meters wide, and up to 60 meters deep. It is very easy to access the trail, and all of the paths are well-marked and maintained. It normally takes about an hour to hike the gorge – which forms a loop – but we took our time and only ended up back at the entrance about two and a half hours after starting. We sure did enjoy every second that we could there! Check out our hike here: Hiking Tolmin Gorge.
Although I am sure that the pictures below are enough, here are 10 reasons why we think that you need to visit Tolmin Gorge:
1.) TURQUOISE WATER
In my opinion, the number one reason to go to Slovenia, and specifically Soca Valley or Tolmin Gorge, would be the unbelievable water color. The perfectly clear turquoise water is a sight to behold as it softly flows along the canyon walls.
2.) THE MAGICAL FOREST
Tolmin Gorge is incredibly enchanting. In fact, I have read several travel blogs stating that every Slovenian forest feels magical in some way. It truly does feel like a fairy is about to pop out from behind a rock, or leaf, at any moment! The natural beauty takes your breath away.
3.) THE BRIDGES
Okay, so this might just be me… but I LOVE bridges! Hopefully a few of you out there share my feelings on this one. There are tons of little bridges to cross in the gorge. Big ones, little ones, narrow ones, and old suspension ones. Standing in the middle of some of them, you get incredible views down the gorge… It is A.MA.Z.I.N.G!
4.) A PHOTOGRAPHER’S HEAVEN
For photographers, travel bloggers, and any sort of nature-lovers… this place is an absolute gem! Around every corner there are new sights and wonders to “wow” you. Every direction offers a different, but wonderful, view. I simply couldn’t get enough of it!
5.) NOT A SOUL IN SIGHT!
Our European trip fell into the peak season for summer travel. As you can imagine, that meant that most of the larger cities, and popular sights, were swarming with tourist. We don’t mind tourists (**notice how I don’t refer to us as being part of the tourists – haha**) but we do LOVE seeing things when no one else is around. Clearly we should do more off-peak season traveling – if only our vacation times allows for this!
Getting to Slovenia and noticing how many less people were there was an IMMEDIATE relief! In fact, I have often wondered if I should even bother blogging about Slovenia. Maybe the less people who know about this gem, the better! Despite the crowds everywhere else in Europe – we barely saw more than a handful off people in the 2+ hours that we spent exploring the gorge!
6.) VARIED HIKING OPPORTUNITIES
The Tolmin Gorge trail is well set out, maintained and protected. Although there are parts of the trail that may be strenuous for some, for the most part it is not a difficult hike. There are some slippery rocks and dark wet tunnels, so those hiking with young children should exercise caution. If you want to get a little more adventurous, there are some steeper incline trails too.
7.) SPECTACULAR VIEWS
This point is definitely clear already – This trail offers spectacular views of the water, the sides of the gorge, caves, and some waterfalls too. There was no point during our hike were we weren’t absolutely in awe of the beauty that surrounded us.
8.) RELAX BY THE WATER
There are parts of the trail that lead you right down to the riverside. There you can walk down to the rocks, and sit down for a while. If you happen to have some food for a picnic – even better! The water is absolutely freezing, but if you are daring enough, you could even take a dip. Don’t say that we didn’t warn you though – Brrrr! We sat by the waters edge and watched the crystal clear turquoise water move along the rocks.
9.) PEACE AND TRANQUILITY
There is no doubt that these pictures aptly depict just how peaceful this part of the world is. It is not hard to see why this was the most tranquil part of our entire two month European Road Trip. We wished that we could stay here forever! Build me a cabin in a forested mountain area like this, and I will kiss the rest of the world goodbye.
10.) OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Slovenia was never on our list of “must see” places for Europe, and yet it turned out to be one of our TOP spots! We do, however, love the less crowded, and more “untouched” sort of travel, so maybe that is why it melted out hearts the way that it did.
