We went to surprise Justin at work a couple of weeks ago, and although I am aware that Elijah usually draws somewhat of a crowd, I never foresaw what would happen on this day. I hadn’t been to the school for about 3 months, and in that time a new wing has been built. I was therefore not sure where to find Justin but I knew that eventually I would. The gatekeeper (usually a grumpy little man who won’t let you into the school unless he recognizes you) was thrilled to see me, and kept saying how cute Elijah was. It was amazing to see this moody little man light up with joy at the sight of my little one. I headed for the new wing of the school but because it was starting to rain heavily, I slipped in one of the side doors of the building. I passed by two classrooms and glanced in as I walked down the corridor. At the third room I saw Justin and stopped to wave at him though the window on the door. He was soooo surprised to see us. I loved the look on his face!! He later said that for a moment, he thought I was still working there and I was passing by and waving, just like I used to. A second later he realized, “Wait a minute, she is not supposed to be here”.
I went into the classroom and they went insane!!!! Especially the girls. They all ran over and some of them looked like they might cry. I can’t tell you how much I love these reactions from the students. I worked at this school for the entire duration of my pregnancy. In fact, on the very last day that I taught classes, I was in the beginning stages of labor and I barely knew it. I though that Elijah was just very low, but I didn’t know that my water would break that evening. Since I taught some of these students during my pregnancy, they were all over the moon to see Elijah. They had so many questions, and they couldn’t stop staring and making “awwww” sounds at every moment he made. I thought that the crowds of people surrounding us might scare Elijah, but he was calm the whole time, even when the students screamed and run toward us.
After visiting Justin’s classes, I made my way over to the primary school section. I worked in both the primary and high school last year, so I had plenty students that I hoped to see. When I got to the teacher’s office and found a few of my grade 1 co-teachers from last year, their reactions really surprised me. One teacher saw me and came sprinting down the hall shouting my name. She melted when she saw Eli. There was one class in particular that I really wanted to see. When I went inside the kids went nuts. My former co-teacher held Elijah and all the kids ran to her, trying to look at him, or touch him in some way. In the past I might have felt uncomfortable with this, but since these kids were my favourite last year, I didn’t mind at all. They all came around me to hug me, and it made me feel so happy inside. The teachers were all gathering in the classroom, and the kids were bouncing around with joy! Before a riot started, I had to say goodbye and head back over to the high school.
I never expected the reactions that we got on this day, but it really was a wonderful surprise and it made me happy. For a (very) brief second I missed being there. As Elijah and I left the school and caught a bus home, I was happy to be alone with him again. My sweet baby boy and I love visiting daddy at work!
