A Taste of South Africa │ Biltong, Nut & Wine Tasting
The KWV Wine Emporium is located in Paarl, and since it’s opening in 2001, the have offered very interesting wine and food pairings. Apart from unique food and wine pairing experiences, the KWV Wine Emporium also offers an interesting cellar tour. We first attended a tasting here with some friends, back in 2013, and this year we returned (with those same friends) to do that same tasting again. What can we say? We know what we like!
KWV Wine Emporium now offers 9 different pairings, each designed to meet the tastes of all connoisseurs.
“Paarl offers one of the most popular cellar tours in the winelands at KWV, whose 55-acre cellar is the largest in the world. Old Afrikaans for “pearl”, Paarl is set under the enormous granite rocks of the Paarl Mountains in the Berg River Valley. After marrying nearby here, Justin and I returned to Paarl with our friends, Clinton and Catherine, on a sunny Saturday morning to try out the KWV Biltong, Nut, and Wine Tasting.”
~ Above Quote from our previous post on the Biltong, Nut and Wine pairing that we did in 2013. You can check out that post HERE! WOW! Looking at that post makes me feel like it was a lot longer than four years between these two visits to KWV Emporium. I posted a couple of “Then & Now” pictures below, but check out that old post too. And please excuse my poor blogging skills back then! In fact, the post was so horrifying that I took some time to fix it up. Ekkkk… the switch over from Blogger left most of my old posts a complete message. FAIL!
A Taste of South Africa: KWV Biltong, Nut & Wine Tasting
This tasting reminded me of all that I love about South Africa. The KWV Classic range reflects the relaxed lifestyle of South Africa, and to bring that together in one tasting experience KWV has paired four of their KWV Classic wines with biltong and nuts. This is a truly authentic South African tasting, and whether you’re a local or a visitor – you are certain to enjoy it!
This pairing is pretty straight-forward, and since we have been here before we told the host she could leave us to get on with it by ourselves. Nothing better than customers that can take care of themselves. Although it is really great to hear all about the grapes and wines, we were happy to sit together and enjoy each wine and food at a leisurely pace. We took our time, enjoyed the company, and savored every sip/ bite.
The foods and wines were perfectly laid out and labeled on a descriptive sheet of paper. It was exciting to sip, eat, and read about each new pairing. We swapped some, shared some, and enjoyed every minute.
Then & Now
I love these two photos. We have certainly all changed a lot – but I think Clinton takes the “Most Improved Award”. Since our last visit to Cape Town he took up cycling, and now the boy is fit! Of course, it is probably Tayla who has changed the MOST in appearance, but then again, she has gone from eight to thirteen years old. This trip to KWV also included our little man. I don’t even want to think how much he will change between this year and our next visit to KWV.
The kids colored in at a small table, while we enjoyed our tasting. Despite the decade difference between Tayla and Eli, they re remarkably close. It is most certainly a bond that melts our hearts!
The Coffee Bar
Behind the tasting room is a cafe selling a delicious range of snacks, souvenirs, and drinks. There were about 100 things that I wanted to buy back there, so I didn’t stay too long, but I loved the peaceful atmosphere and collection of South African “goodies”. Hand-woven baskets, fresh toasted cheese and ham sandwiches, coffee and rusks, and tantalizing spice mixtures.
I resisted the urge, but I definitely could have left with half the store!
