We have been really surprised at just how much people have given, and continue to give, for our baby – most of it for free. I put out word that we were having a baby and that we wanted to save money by buying gently used baby products and furniture. Since then people have been emailing me to say that I can come over to see what they have – some of it they want to sell (for not much at all), and a lot of it they simply want to give away. It really has been an indication to us of how God provides when you trust Him. Even though we have been saving for a baby since before we even fell pregnant, we still want to try and spend as little money as possible on things that might only be used for a short period. The fact that people have been giving us so many things makes it possible for us to have a couple of different options when it comes to everything that we need for baby. Each baby is different, so having choices when it comes to carriers, for example, means that we can use whatever we find feels most comfortable with our little one.
We are definitely “less is more” kind of people, so we also don’t want to go crazy buying every contraption and baby product that people say you “must-have”. I personally think that babies really don’t need as much as people think they do, especially during the first few months. Sure, there are things that make life a little easier, but most of it is just a huge waste of money. We therefore hope to continue to be wise with our spending, and not go crazy on unnecessary items that we will have to get rid of in a few months (because we have such a small apartment).
About two weeks ago, we went over to the house of someone Justin plays soccer with to pick up a few things that him and his wife were selling. They are moving back to Australia in May/ June and they have a one year old, so much of what we are about to need, they are getting rid of. We only bought three things – some laundry soap, a sound machine, and three cans of formula (just our little man has any breast-feeding issues), but we came home with so much more! Books, pillows, baby carriers, a bathtub and newborn insert, and little bits and pieces that will come in handy later.
We have barely spent much money on baby stuff at all, and yet we feel like we already have quite a few essentials. A big white crib was given to us, and in May we will pick up a changing table that goes perfectly with the crib. In the next few weeks a friend is giving us a feeding chair, and we are lending a feeding pillow and playmate from another family. All of these things are important, but only for a certain period of time, so lending them from others is perfect!
As you can see in the picture above, we are slowly but surely collecting everything that we need – and we are not spending an arm and leg to do so. I won’t even tell you how little we have spent! Our baby shower is later this month, and we will be excited to share that occasion with you through pictures. We feel really blessed, and we are thankful for everything that God has, and continues, to provide us with. Little baby will have everything he needs, and so much more!
