Back in January
We are back! We got back to China on Saturday, and we are all settled back into the swing of things. I only sent out one blog post while we were away, but I wrote a number of other posts. I will be sending those out over the course of the next couple weeks. Since we didn’t have much internet on Palawan, we couldn’t connect very often. Of course, the typhoons and our lack of ability to communicate left a few people quite worried. We really did all that we could to connect – thank you to our patient, loving family and friends for thinking of us.
It is normally around this time of the year that we are gearing up to a long winter break. Some years this break has been five weeks long for us, but this year our vacation is split into TWO. Apparently we are among a very small group that actually find this displeasing. Although we would love to leave China for another 2 weeks next month, I doubt that we will. One large trip means we only need one set of flights, but TWO trips means double the flight costs. We can travel on a budget, but the flight costs are pretty high for the Chinese New Year period. At the moment, it looks like we will be staying here during that time. And amazingly enough, we have NEVER spent Chinese New Year in China. It is a noisy, cold, polluted time. There are fireworks going off constantly, and the city of Qingdao is just NOT pretty. We haven’t even been home a week and my skin is dry and flaky, my lips are chapped, and we are starting to cough. Madness.
It will suck to stay home during Chinese New Year! BUT, we can hibernate, turn up the music, and cook delicious meals. SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!
It seems odd to be starting the year this way, but then again, everything about the last few weeks has been new and strange for us. We had Christmas off, we were away for most of the festive season, we were homesick, and here we sit, in January, WITH A TAN. This is definitely a very different start to the year for us!
Lots of Philippine pictures and travel stories coming your way soon..
Since we haven’t even blogging half our way through the 2017 South Africa Winter Trip, we will be alternating weeks. Last year we alternated between New Zealand and South Africa. For the next 4-6 months, I’ll be posting one week of South Africa stories, and then one week of the Philippine stories. I think that it is safe to say that I will be posting on those, and currently life events, until we leave for Texas!
