There’s a place we love to go when we are in South Africa. It’s called Mugg&Bean. When I lived in SA, I would sit in Mugg&Bean for hours, reading, studying, or meeting with friends, while drinking cup after cup of coffee. It’s been years of trying to convince Justin to drink coffee, and eventually (while I was pregnant) he really started to enjoy it. It just wasn’t the same when we’d go for coffee and he’d had a milkshake. I wanted him to sit with me, sip on his coffee, read a book, and stay like that for however long we decided. Now that’s he’s drinking coffee, we have a child, so coffee dates aren’t quite the same. In fact, unless we get a babysitter, coffee dates are more about Elijah. There are however times when Eli takes a nap, or we have someone who is dying to play with him, and then we get to sit together and quietly enjoy our coffee. In South Africa, it was all about family time, so we put Elijah in the stroller, went to the nearest shopping mall, and sat down to enjoy coffee, good conversation, and a meal/snack.
We don’t have Starbucks in South Africa, but Justin and I enjoy our trips to Mugg&Mean far more. The atmosphere is better, the smell of the muffins and cakes is incredible, and well, there’s bottomless coffee… need I say more?! For about $3 you get as much coffee as you want (and you can switch between flavours), and the food that they serve is AMAZING!
