Tomorrow is the day! We have been looking forward to this day for a number of weeks.
The day we could possibly find out if we are having a boy or a girl!
And we really are… SO excited!
I say “possibly” because even though we are already in week 17, there are a few factors that make a gender-reveal kind of tricky if you are having a baby in China.
Firstly, husbands are not allowed into the room for the ultrasound. Since Justin was not able to be there for my first scan, being at this one is very important to us. We are hoping that the doctors apply different rules for us since we are not Chinese. Other foreign couples have got away with this at the hospital we are going to – so with some luck, we will be able to convince them to do the same for us.
Secondly, it is illegal to reveal the sex of the baby to expecting parents in China. I won’t get into the reasons for that right now, but let’s just say that most of my Chinese co-workers are super excited and shocked that tomorrow I could possibly know whether there is a boy or girl growing inside my belly. Again, we are hoping for the rules to be bent in our favour! Yes – that’s two things that we need favour for tomorrow, and of course, I don’t think I really even want to know the sex if Justin can’t be there to find out with me, so if we can’t get him into the room, I will not ask if it’s a boy or girl. We’re praying that he will be standing right there next to me, and when our friend Amber asks in Chinese, “Is it a boy or girl?” – the ultrasound technician gives us a definite answer. They have been known to say things like, “It’s a healthy baby” to avoid giving an answer.
Our third variable for tomorrow is that our baby simply may not be laying in a position that makes it possible to see whether there’s a boy or girl in there. So our third hope is that baby is moving around, or lying in a relaxed position, i.e. not with legs crossed.
I’m going to be thrilled whether it’s a boy or a girl, but as I have said before, I have thought all the while that it’s a little girl. We are looking forward to talking to baby using a name, and we know that this will strengthen bonding time with our little man or our pretty princess.
Although we all know that old-wives tales are just made up – just for fun (or to keep us entertained until we know for sure) – here’s what they say our baby will be….
Carrying Low – boy
Girls steal your beauty. No Skin Blemishes means a boy
Wedding Ring tied to some string swings back and forth over belly – girl
Little one’s heart rate is over 140 bmp. girl
Not really craving anything, but prefer salty over sweet right now! boy
Hubby hasn’t put on any weight, so it could be a boy
Lots of nausea means it’s a girl
Chinese Gender Prediction Chart says it’s a girl
My legs are growing hair at an alarming rate – boy
Round, full face means – girl
My feet are warmer than they were before – girl
This quiz: Is it a BOY or GIRL? says I’m having a girl
That’s five points for the boy team and seven points for the girl team.
Hopefully tomorrow we won’t have to guess anymore!
