Marina City, Qingdao
Earlier this week, with three week days off from school, we ventured to Marina City (aka Qingdao International Marina Shopping Plaza) which is located adjacent to the Qingdao International Marina and Olympic Sailing Centre. On Facebook, we had seen a buffet brunch special that was running at a place called Swedish House, and we thought this might be a great way to start the day. It’s great how many notices we get of things to do in Qingdao via Facebook ~ Very useful when living in a foreign country!!
Zongzi (or simply zong)
This was the first time that I tried a zongzi which is a traditional Chinese food, made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo, reed, or other large flat leaves. They are cooked by steaming or boiling. The one that I tried was smaller than usual, which was good because I didn’t know if I would like it.
My verdict? The inside of the zongzi didn’t taste too bad at all. I liked it! However, since I’m not a ‘mushy-food’ fan, that aspect was not too appealing to me. I am sure that there are many versions of this, and each time they may be different, so I would be willing to try it again. The pork filling was delicious!
Swedish House, Marina City
This week was the Dragon Boat Festival in China, so most Chinese people had half the week off. As a result, the restaurant was packed but being brunch-time, tables were not sitting for too long. We got seated around the corner, to the back of the restaurant. It was quiet there so this suited us just fine. The walk all the way to the buffet seemed to justify eating multiple plates of food. Ha! Wishful thinking!
Fried fish, salad, and omelette.
Pasta and meatballs with lots of salad.
I’m not sure what this is but it was filled with red bean paste (Whyyy??) so I didn’t eat the whole thing. A buffet is a good place to try out new foods!!
Anyone know what this is called?
In all honesty, we SHOULD NOT be eating at buffets! We have both picked up way too much weight since our wedding in February!! Twenty pounds on this little frame of mine has left me with only three outfits that fit! Despite this knowledge – On this glorious day out and about together we didn’t care how tight our waistbands were… We were here to EAT!!!
We returned to the buffet table a few times!
Some salad to compensate for the fried food.
There was a salad section of the buffet where you could make up your own salad – it was stocked pretty decently with bacon bits, olives, gherkins, croutons, and various veggies. The lettuce was mixed with some kind of squid and bits of pork fat. I didn’t eat the latter but the squid was a good addition to the salad.
When our bellies were full we left the buffet but neither of us felt too stuffed.
Phew, we didn’t completely pig out! We have a habit of doing that from time to time.
We meandered around the shopping centre after brunch.
Entertained by their reflections.
Random “Thug Life” figures.
“Can I have a chocolate Easter Egg this size?”
Too sunny to be indoors
The weather outside was GORGEOUS so we got some Starbucks and then left the buildings to soak up some sunlight, and walk along the pier.
Splashing in the fountain… SUMMER FUN!
This vehicle reminded us of the Pedal Hopper experience that we had in Denver, Colorado. The Chinese guys onboard were shouting to us in English, “Come get on, FREE BEER!!” I had a facial booked for shortly after this so I didn’t want to drink beer before my appointment. We will have to go back and see if this “Beer Car” is always there.
Strolling through the city
We bumped into Denny and April in H&M while Justin was looking for some new work shirts. Coincidently, I was supposed to meet up with April for a facial about an hour later, so it was quite funny that we randomly found them just then while both our hubbies were looking for clothes.
Shop on a staircase
I love the novel idea of this little store on the staircase leading from the underground shopping. What a great place to sell snacks and drinks, while people are heading up onto the street level.
We also walked around the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center,
And you can view those pictures here.
Justin and I walked around with April until it was time for us girls to have our facial.
More on that and what we did for the rest of the day and that evening coming in another blog post. We are on day 2 of our juice fast and suddenly my eyes feel heavy. It’s nap time!!
