The Car-less Village of Mürren | Jungfrau Region, Switzerland.
This traditional Walser mountain village in the Bernese Oberland, is perched atop a 2,500-foot wall overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley. Mürren is car-less village you access, by taking a cable car past rushing waterfalls and steep rock faces. We visited on our way from Lauterbrunnen to Schilthorn. Due to it’s location, this charming town helps you enjoy the impressive views of the opposing mountain summits. At 1,650 meters, it’s the highest, continuously inhabited village in the Bern district. The numerous alpine meadows above Mürren provide views of the snow-capped peaks of the Breithorn (3,782 m.), Tschingelhorn (3,577 m.), Gspalthorn (3,437 m.) and numerous others mountains that have drawn alpinists to this region since the late 1700s.
Mürren is the starting point for many walks, excursions and experiences. In fact, there are roughly 200km of walking trails surrounding the area. Themed walks such as the North Face Trail, providing historical mountaineering information on the north faces, and the Flower Panorama Trail invite visitors to discover the region from a different angle. Playgrounds and picnic areas are provided for families with children.
Mürren has a population of just 450, but has 2,000 hotel beds. It has it’s own school and two churches, one Reformed and one Roman Catholic. Mürren station is the terminus of the Bergbahn Lauterbrunnen-Mürren, which consists of a aerial tramway and connecting narrow gauge railway, and connects Mürren to Lauterbrunnen.
Above, the Allmendhubel-Bahn
Allmendhubel is a small summit above Mürren, since 1912 there is a small funicular which brings the skiers or hikers to the top. This experience offers a one-of-a-kind experience in the Alps and it also makes for an easy journey resulting in breathtaking views of the Jungfraujoch. The last part of the line is in a tunnel. In 1999, the old red cars were replaced with new panoramic cars. This is also the starting point of numerous trails including the famous Northface trail.
