QISS Halloween 2017
On Halloween, a Tuesday this year, there was a lot going on at Justin’s school. I had offered to help the PTA moms set up, and distribute, candy and snacks to the students. Eli and I dressed, in our Pirate and Parrot outfits, and went to the school to help out. The hallways were all decorated, and the kids were dressed up too. It was great to be part of the Halloween festivities. Even better, Eli is old enough to want to take part now, so he was thrilled from the moment that we got there.
We helped set up the snack table, and waited around in the gym until the elementary kids started to come in. As soon as they did, Eli disappeared. He was constantly walking around, interacting with students, and trying to take part in the games. When we wasn’t doing that, he was standing munching on popcorn, while watching all of the activities that were going on. Teachers had set up a variety of games around the gym, and each class would move from game to game.
Ready to Have Some Fun!
One of the teachers wore a HUGE dinosaur costume – it had a fan inside that kept the whole thing upright! Eli saw the dinosaur and walked right up to it to say hello. Afterwards he came back to me shouting, “It’s a Dinosaur!!!!” I think he thought that it was real. I assumed that he would have been afraid, but he was really intrigued.
Part of the Class
As the classes started to come into the gym, Eli’s face lit up. Ever since our trip to South Africa, he has become so incredibly social. He LOVES to be a part of a group, and it is fascinating to watch how much he has changed in this regard. In the past, he was always off doing his own thing! I often wondered how he would ever adapt to a school-like setting, but this day pretty much cleared that up in my mind.
For a couple of minutes, both Justin and I were looking around the hall for Eli. His normal habits would result in him wandering off somewhere – maybe even out of the gym. Not this time though! We found him, sitting in line, with a bunch of 4th graders. He didn’t care that he wasn’t part of the class. Nope, he just got into their class line and sat down with them. hahaha
When the classes split up to do the games, Eli stayed seated with one of the classes 😂
Eli had about five cups of popcorn, and he felt no shame at all wandering back to the machine repeatedly to ask for more. The PTA moms were so sweet with him. They kept giving him more and more popcorn!
Watching him stand around, eating his popcorn, while watching “the show” was quite amusing. He really enjoyed standing near this bowling game. When the pins got knocked down, he was eager to help pick them up again.
Just one of the Kids
In situations like this, I usually have to keep a constant eye on Eli because he quiet and he often just walks off. He also hides! On this day, however, it felt so good to let him roam and know that he had no interest in leaving the gym. There was way too much fun going on here. He wasn’t going anywhere!
He ended up befriending one of Justin’s students, and after that point they were inseparable.
All I had to do was look for this pink jacket, and right next to her I would see little Eli!
They held hands and went from game to game. It was pretty darn cute.
Where is Eli?
Look for that pink coat…
Yup, there he is!
Time to Head Home
When the elementary games were over, and we had eaten lunch with everyone in the cafeteria, I decided that I should probably take Eli home. The PTA moms were staying all day, and would be handing out candy to the high schoolers too, but I thought perhaps we had stayed long enough.
We went up to Justin’s office to gather our things, and then we said our goodbyes.
A Change of Plans
As we were leaving the building, Eli’s friend from the hall saw us and screamed “Myyyyyy boyfriend!!!!!!!!” 😂 She ran over to us, grabbed Eli’s hand and walked off with him. I had all of our bags and belongings on me, and I was completely ready to call a car. Eli wouldn’t come back to me – he wasn’t done having fun. The entire school filed into the hall, and settled in to watch a Thriller Dance-Off. I admitted defeat, and went back up to Justin’s office to put my bags down again.
When I returned to the hall, Eli was sitting in the front row of the hall, next to his “girlfriend”. He didn’t even notice that I had gone upstairs for five minutes!
After the dance off we finally left the school, but not without being begged for Eli to stay all day. I think Maria would have taken him back to class with her, if I had let her. Little man was asleep within two minutes of us getting home. We both had a really great day, and it was sooooo good to see Justin.
