Today on China Groceries: DefaLucy. Can you image our surprise when we came across THIS “Barbie” in the toy section of the grocery store. Firstly, what the heck? And secondly, wow!! There really isn’t much to say or explain about this grocery store find, mostly because we were speechless. What is there to say? The doll’s accessories and the it’s frightening name definitely sum it all up.
I began to wonder if this was a toy sold in other unsuspecting countries, so I searched “DefaLucy” and I found this blog, with a blog post titled,”Things that are weird in Israel #11″. Clearly that blogger was doing a similar series to this! The interesting thing I discovered was that DefaLucy was NOT named so for the toilet accessory that we found her sold with. We had assumed that “Defa-” stood for “defecation”, but a search on the internet revealed that Lucy comes with all sorts of accessories. It seems that we just happened to stumble on the funniest Lucy of all because her name seemed to be grossly appropriate to the accessory toilet that she was sold with. The funniest part is that they use squat toilets here in China, so I assumed that this toy was being sold to teach children how newer toilets work. Apparently not… This is not a China specific toy, but as you can imagine, it was “Made in China”.
Mind-blowing! That has got to be the weirdest rip-off Barbie I have ever seen.
Perhaps a more fitting name would have been “DefaKate”
