How amazing is it that so many of our best friends from China live IN TEXAS?! We all met on the other side of the world, and here we are, in Texas… able to hang out and spend a weekend together. Trent and Angie live in San Antonio, and Zachary and Heather live in the Austin area. The four of them met and then drove to Dallas to spend the weekend with us. We were so excited to see them, and have them stay with us.
Heather made an hilarious gift for Bryan and Sue. She had asked what each of them liked, Justin listed a few items, and then Heather got creative. She wrote quotes from “Duck Dynasty” on Dr Pepper bottles (for Sue) and on Coors Light (for Bryan). She added a bunch of their favourite mini candies and then wrapped it all up. Oh Heather, you are so sweet and creative. This really got us all laughing!
We were eager to see how much Angie’s beautiful bump had grown. Although we saw her in China two months ago, just before her and Trent moved back to Texas, she is in the second half of her pregnancy, so her belly is nice and round now. The next time that Justin and I see Trent and Angie, they will be holding their son, Jedidiah.
There were various gifts exchanged – you know how it is when there are babies involved. There are just too many cute things to get babies. Zachary and Heather gave Elijah a couple of cute outfits, some new bath toys, and a big fluffy puppy, with a tag saying “Chara” (their dog’s name). Now Elijah can always have something to remind him of his big fury friend.
On Saturday we did a baby dedication for Elijah, and then a marriage blessing for us. We didn’t want to make these events into a huge affair, so we kept things simple. It was all very casual, but perfect! After the ceremonies were over, we all changed into our swimsuits and jumped into the pool. Justin made sure there was meat cooking on the grill so that we could all enjoy some afternoon fajitas.
Sue, being the great host that she is, tried out some new recipes. On the left, Cheeto-crusted fried mozzarella sticks, and on the right, hash browns stuffed with cheese and then fried. As you can tell, we were going all out on the fried snacks. It seemed that the hash brown balls were the winner!
Searching for a missing earring…
Look at that intense concentration!
It felt like we were a big family, living in one house, and having a normal weekend together. It was all so natural and comfortable. In fact… we are so close that when Saturday ended, we even all landed up in the bathroom at the same time, brushing our teeth. Now THAT is a picture perfect moment!
These four (five) will be staying in Texas, but we will be returning to China, which was once the home we all shared. It is odd to think that only the three of us will be returning there. It wasn’t easy to say goodbye… I’m not sure what is wrong with us. We really do seem to be getting worse and worse at goodbyes.
We are so thankful for a wonderful weekend. It was good to catch up and spend time together, and most of all, to share a few more special milestones. What a blessing to have such awesome friends!
