Sophia International Hotel
As we entered the hotel where the event was being held, we were met by the newly married couple. They led us to a table which had a box on top of it. It was there that Heather placed money into a red envelope and signed her name. This process probably ensures that all the guests give something… haha, no freeloaders coming just to eat and drink. There you are, right at the door with the couple standing next to you, and the expectation to give something. A novel way of ensuring that you get a nice sum of money by the end of the evening.
On the subject of red dresses, here I am in my “red wedding dress” at a photo shoot we did in China after getting in engaged. Typically, this is the part of Asian weddings that are quite different to Western weddings. Most couples choose to have professional photos taken as much as 3 months before the wedding. Most of the photography companies providing this service will also dress the couple, and do their hair and make up. We were fortunate enough to have all of this done, not for our wedding, but for our engagement shoot.
Those doing the shoot spoke no English, so they were VERY confused as to why we wanted to do all of the scenes and outfits suggested except for the one with me in a white wedding gown. You see, Justin and I are quite old-fashioned, and we didn’t want to see each other dressed as we would be on our wedding day (especially me in a wedding gown), so we declined this part of the shoot. All the other couples in China who do these shoots are, in fact, also not yet married, so it was baffling to our photographer that we didn’t want to do this. It was supposed to be the climax of the photo shoot – the wedding gown!! Unable to speak Chinese, this was tough for us to explain to them.
Chinese people give small tins filled with candy to their co-workers after their wedding. Justin has been given two of these tins already by co-workers in the high school. I love the cute little characters!! Even more so, I love the adorable Chinese kissing dolls (they belong to The Mosby’s) in the first picture of this blog post! Their lips are magnetic so they automatically kiss when placed facing each other!!
Peace, Love and Happiness to Everyone!
