I started attending Hillsong Church while I lived in London, roughly between 2003 and 2006. After that I moved back to Cape Town for a short time, and I was thrilled to hear that a new Hillsong was opening in Cape Town too. Having being bitten by the travel bug too many times to count – I only stayed in South Africa for a little while before moving to South Korea to teach English. As many of you know, that was where I began the journey of finding myself, and also met the love of my life. He did not know Jesus when we starting dating – but less than a year later, he made the decision that has changed almost every aspect of his being since then. With this new found curiosity in his heart, I found it hard to lead Justin because I, myself, did not have much experience in this field. In December of 2010 we visited South Africa so that Justin could meet my family, and see where I grew up. On Christmas Day I took him to Hillsong, and he ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!! My dream was for him to find his identity in the Lord, and since that Christmas Day in 2010 I have watched his heart change more and more everyday. I am so proud of him. He has become the man that I saw deep inside right from the moment we met – He just needed a little push in the right direction. Every now and then I look at him, and thank God for letting me see in him what no one else had before. My prayer has been answered – and now he leads me, just like a husband should. He has grown by leaps and bounds.
Since then we have been traveling all over Asia and to the States, so we have not been able to plug into another church for too long. We miss it! We want to discover more, to grow, and to be surrounded by people who encourage us and teach us things that we very much want to learn. During our first year in China, we did not attend church once and it was tough on our new found faith. We are now in a new city, and we plan to be here for a while. There are tons of churches to choose from, so we pray that we find the right one for us. The one that God wants to use us in. The place where He was us to grow.
I was really happy to hear that some of my closest friends have been attending Hillsong since we left South Africa after our wedding, in February. Some of them had found the church by themselves, and others we dragged there with us. No, really… every week we tried to talk them into it. Slowly, softly, but still, we had to do some convincing. Justin and I know how comfortable things can get, and how easy it is to neglect going to church. The Hillsong sermons really shake us up, and we want that for all of the people that we love!!
Grand West, Cape Town
On our last Sunday in South Africa, we attended a joint service at Grand West. Three Hillsong churches -Century City, Somerset West, and Mitchells Plain – all gathered together for a sermon and worship. Due to size of these three churches, we had to meet in Grand West Arena. Waiting outside reminded me of waiting in line for a rock concert. People were excited!! They couldn’t wait to get inside, hear the message, and worship. We love these events!
