Dangerous Draincovers. There is no denying that things are not built very well over here in China. Buildings can, and might, fall over. Walls crack and crumble. There are random wires sticking out of the ground. An numerous other dangers lurking around every corner. No one seems overly concerned – many times these dangers are left uncovered and with no warning signs around them. In the States you could probably sue someone if you stand on a cracked manhole cover and fall into a hole, but here, there might not even be a manhole cover. In many ways, I like the simplicity of life here, but these issues mean that you really have to watch your kids when they are out playing. Last week Elijah and I found a random drainage hole between some trees – it was uncovered, of course!
When we first moved to China in 2011, Justin and I quickly learned that looking down was A MUST in China. We always step over/around draincovers because… well, this is China… you just might fall right into a hole.
Would you stand on that?
Or ride over this…
These are a pretty common sight for us in China!
Top left, cracked manhole cover. Top right, manhole filled with trash. Bottom left, no manhole cover at all. And finally, bottom right, that poor motorcycle driver caught a nasty surprise! The truth is that we see holes like this all the time in China, and no one here is even slightly phased by them.
It is therefore no surprise that Justin and I completely avoid all drain covers in China. Much to our horror, Elijah is completely obsessed with them. If we are walking holding his hand, he will pull with all of his might to get to any drain that we are passing by. He will walk the length of them, jump on them, and even bend down and try to look into them!
He is so intrigued by them, and of course, completely unaware that jumping on them might be dangerous. Thankfully, we are (mostly) confident that the ones in our apartment complex are safe. Our hearts don’t pound as much for those, but when we are out and about in Qingdao, we do get a little nervous when he excitedly runs to jump on nearby drains.
Elijah usually fixates on something for a short time, and then he moves on and he’s not as interested in it anymore. At one time he was crazy about plugs, and then after that he was besotted with sitting behind our air purifier unit. We are hoping that this draincover obsession doesn’t last too long.
