Yesterday afternoon Justin celebrated at our apartment with a few of his friends. The reason for the celebration was our baby, and since I had already been blessed with a baby shower, Justin thought that he would have a party too – “a dadchelor party”. All the guys had to do was arrive at the party with a pack of diapers, and to say thank you to them Justin provided BBQ and beers for all of the men. We had seen this being done by a friend in Texas while we were there, so we thought we would do it too. I’m glad that we did because it was a great time for the guys, and we got 700+ diapers for our little one.
We decided to make kebabs for the BBQ since that would be something easy for people to snack on as they came off the grill throughout the afternoon. Justin had to work yesterday morning, so we cut up all the meat on Friday night. While he went to teach his morning lessons, I prepared various pasta and potato salads, and then skewered all the meat. Knowing that we were only serving men meant that we wanted to be sure that none of them went home hungry. We planned to make about 80 skewers with chicken, pork and veggies. While I was at home making the salads and kebabs, Justin called to say that he really didn’t feel good at all. An hour later he called again to say that he had left his lessons and was on his way home. He sounded awful. I didn’t know if I should carry on with the preparations or if we were going to cancel. When he got home he looked pale and he had no strength so he took some medicine and got into bed. He said that he might feel better after some sleep, so not knowing what else to do, I kept on preparing the food. I really didn’t mind either way, but I was starting to worry about him since his vision was blurry and he felt feverish. As 3pm drew closer it looked like he was getting worse and worse. I don’t know why we didn’t cancel at that point… I guess we were both hanging onto the hope that he would start feeling better. When the first guest arrived Justin had to put on his brave face! I was proud of him for doing so well. All afternoon he hid the fact that he felt terrible by keeping busy and BBQ-ing the kebabs. Unfortunately bending down made his head spin, and that is what he needed to do frequently since we only have a small portable BBQ, but I’m proud of him for doing so well. A few hours into the party he opened his first beer, so I knew that he was doing better. We still aren’t sure what came over him yesterday, but we hope that it stays away!!
I had originally planned to leave the guys for the afternoon to go shopping and then sit at Stabucks for a couple of hours, but because I had to work pretty hard to prepare everything by myself my back and feet were killing me when 3pm arrived! I therefore decided to stay in my bedroom and rest. Justin came to the room to ask me for a hand with something and I could tell that my poor husband was struggling so I stayed in the kitchen for the next few hours, making sure he only had to worry about grilling the kebabs. It felt good to be alone in there – barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen – and I was more than happy to help my sweet hubby!! Whenever I could, I would quietly escape to the bedroom to lie down for a while. I’m pretty impressed with our teamwork effort yesterday. Despite Justin being really ill, and me being 8 months pregnant, we pulled together and everything worked out perfectly!
The invite for the Diaper Shower
Justin doesn’t have many friends here in China, but he has been making more and more friends recently through our church. We are so happy to be attending this fellowship because we have been making some great connections with people. The pregnancy and a month in Thailand kept us away from church for a while, but despite this we still feel like we are in the right place and making good friends. Even though some of the friends that Justin invited to the party couldn’t make it, he still had a great time and we are so thankful for the diapers that we received!
The weather was beautiful in the morning, but as the afternoon approached the clouds moved in and started to cover FuShan (the mountain behind our apartment) so Justin had to set up the BBQ on the inside section of our balcony. Thanks to unpredictable weather we are YET to actually BBQ outside, but we know that there will be plenty of summer days when we will be able do this! Our little baby will need to be at home and sleeping a lot, so mommy and daddy will be grilling and enjoying the good weather (when we aren’t also trying to sleep).
A big thank you to all the guys who blessed us with diapers for our little one! We really appreciate all the contributions our friends have made. Our baby is already so blessed – He sure is one lucky baby and we can’t wait to have him in our arms!
