We met up with The Stathopulo’s for a double family date on Friday afternoon. May 1st is a public holiday in China, so we were all free for the day. That did, of course, mean that all the restaurants and stores were packed, but we decided to meet for lunch and some shopping. We met at Da Mu Zher, the shopping mall near to our apartment complex. Elijah took a nap while Justin and I walked there to meet our friends. You probably remember them from our Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, mommy dates, and many baby photos of Eli and Thea (who were born about 8 weeks apart). With three kids needing high chairs, it wasn’t easy to decide on a restaurant. We chose to eat Thai food at a restaurant called “Banana Leaf”, and miraculously, they had two baby seats (which is a lot in Qingdao) so the youngest two were able to sit in those. Unfortunately the food took forever, came out in drip and drabs, wasn’t that good, and service pretty much sucked. We have been to this restaurant three times before. The first two occasions were great. So much so that we have been recommending this place to friends. The third time that we went the menu had changed and we did not enjoy our visit. We thought that we would give them one more try since every restaurant has it’s bad days, but that was a mistake. Perhaps they have new owners/ management because the menu is now much more Chinese than Thai, and the service was almost non-existent!
You can read about on of our more successful experiences at this Thai restaurant here:
Thai Food Fix (a date night that we went on before we had Elijah)
Even though the menu did change, they were fortunately still serving one our favourites. The dish that you see below is super tasty! Seasoned pork with red and green chili peppers, in bite-size lettuce wraps. The red peppers seemed to be more spicy last time we came, but I was pregnant then so that might have been why I couldn’t handle them as much back then. They seemed very mild this time.
Have a look at these two…
Thea and Eli are both getting so big. Thea turned one last month and she’s walking around in her “big girl” shoes. Elijah will be one next month too! We are hoping that our “next round of babies” come at around the same time again, so that we can watch our bumps, and then babies, grow at the same time.
In the end, all was not lost for our date with friends! We got to do a bit of shopping and have lunch with our friends. We are hoping to meet once a month for a Double Family Date, and next month we will be checking out a new shopping mall that opened downtown. Apparently there is a Texas-style restaurant. We definitely have to see what they have available there!
