Eli Meets a Newborn
Last week, during Baby Jonathan’s newborn shoot, Elijah was happily playing upstairs while I was working downstairs. I had given him the iPad so I knew that he wouldn’t come wandering downstairs to see what I was up to. Even without the iPad he could stay upstairs for hours at a time – but still, I liked the reassurance that he was playing his alphabet apps. I checked on him a couple of times, and he barely moved from his table – one time I went up there and he was standing up, doing the actions to a song. GOSH — love this kid! Towards the end of my shoot, I went upstairs to get him. I am not completely sure why I decided to do this, because we actually were not done shooting. I guess I started to feel a bit bad that Eli had been up there alone for so long. I brought him downstairs, interested to see how he would react to the newborn.
As most of you know, we have been praying for baby #2 since we had Eli. It is no secret that we want more children. We have faced loses, and the journey has been painful and challenging. As the years go by, and Eli changes from month-to-month, I keep wondering, “How would he handle a little sibling NOW?” Until this particular day, he never really showed ANY interest in babies. It was almost as if he couldn’t tell that they were real OR he just couldn’t care less that they were there.
Much to my surprised, Eli walked over to Baby Jonathan and stopped right beside him. Eli made a few soft cute sounds and then put a couple of toys next to the baby. He then lay a soft stuffed Hippo next to Jonathan, and started to gently run his fingers along the baby’s back. It was absolutely adorable how he knew that he had to be gentle. To be honest, I was slightly nervous – but at the same time, I was very intrigued to see what he would do.
Eli climbed onto the bed where Jonathan was laying, and sat with his knees on either side of the baby. He pointed at the “S” on the back of Jonathan’s diaper, and then said “Sssss”. He giggled, and slowly lay his head down towards the baby. The cutest part was that he went really close to him, but never actually lay on him. It was as though he KNEW that the baby was delicate and that he couldn’t rest his body weight on him.
As I mentioned, I wasn’t quite done with the photoshoot, but Eli just WOULD NOT leave Jonathan’s side! He got off the bed and lay with his head close to the baby, and moved his car back-and-forth along the surface near him. Eli moaned every time we tried to move him away from Baby J.
My little boy looked so incredible big next to this tiny baby, and it was mind-blowing to think that he was this size just 2.5 years ago! In the picture below you can see Eli’s lips puckered up. He was making soft little sounds for the baby. Oh my word… It was adorable!
Needless to say, my mama-heart melted and I wished for another baby EVEN MORE!
