Eli Turns TWO. Our sweet boy is two years old, and we just can’t fathom how quickly the last year has flown by. It feels like just yesterday that we moved into this awesome apartment, and celebrated his first birthday with a cake smash. June is a very busy time of the year – lots of people have already left for the summer break, but we are always here until the last minute, with lots to do and prepare. It should be a winding down time as the school year comes to an end, but it feels like one last scramble to get things done. Needless to say, having a birthday during this time of the year is difficult to plan for. I remember when Elijah was born – it felt like I was giving birth when people were coming, going, or already long gone. The same will be true for each year that we celebrate his birthday in the Northern Hemisphere. Down south he would have a winter birthday, right in the middle of the school year.
Justin took the day off work, and we did what we love to do more than anything else: a full day of quality family time. We started the day off early, opening gifts that Elijah had received via mail from his grandparents, and great grandparents, in the States. This was the first time that he actually took part in the opening process! We took a few videos and will post those at a later stage, for the grandparents who so much wished they could have been here, watching him open the gifts that they had sent.
Elijah is crazy about dinosaurs at the moment, so this outfit was perfect! Actually, all the clothes, books and toys that he received were wonderful. As usual, he opened one gift and then didn’t care about the rest. He’s definitely the type that opens a gift, then plays with it for hours before even thinking about opening another. NOT normal… BUT super special and amazing!
After breakfast and the gift opening, we got dressed and went to a nearby attraction. The Polar Ocean World is not too far away, but we have never been. It is quite pricey per adult, and we were just not sure if Elijah would enjoy it. When he started staring at fishes in a tank a couple of weeks ago, we knew that he was ready for this experience!
Elijah was absolutely IN AWE from the very minute that we entered Polar Ocean World. We stood at the first window looking at some whales, for ages! There was so much more to see, but he didn’t know that, and he didn’t want to move from that first window. He stood, fixated, with both hands on the glass. Those adorable little eyes of his were wide open, and he looked so happy!
Of course, we have plenty more pictures from Polar Ocean World! We will do a separate post on that since there was just just too much to add to this one post.
When we had walked through all of the tunnels and paths within Polar Ocean World, Eli was starting to rub his eyes. We knew that he needed some food before he started to nod off, so we took a stroll along the ocean. We settled at a little cafe that we have been eyeing for months!
Along the way, daddy bought Eli a bubble machine. Oh my word, I have no words to describe the joy that this simple toy brought. We know he loves bubbles, so I have no idea why we have never bought one of these before! Push one button and hundreds of bubbles come shooting out. Look at the joy on his face!
It was a hot day, so we enjoyed the refreshing ocean breeze while sipping ice coffees at Lang Cafe. Elijah LOVED the chicken nuggets. This was a great little breather for us. We knew that while Eli took his afternoon nap, we would need to set up for his party, so we enjoyed the peace and relaxation.
When we got home, Eli went straight up to his crib. We started gathering everything to take for the party set-up. While we set up for Elijah’s Party, he should have been napping… but evidently, the morning at Polar Ocean World was way too exciting! We had asked Nana to stay at our apartment while we set up for the party, and it turned out that Eli decided he didn’t need a nap on his birthday! Justin and I set up some decorations at one of our favorite little restaurants, located just around the corner from where we live. At 3pm the guests started arriving…. however, Eli had by then fallen asleep in his stroller and he didn’t wake up until almost 4:30 (and only because we were trying to gently wake him).
Little man almost missed his own birthday!
More Birthday Party pictures coming this week.
What a wonderful birthday! We are so happy that we got to spend Eli’s birthday as a family, doing what we love most. The party went well, and we could tell that Elijah had a wonderful time. We will share lots more on his birthday activities in some upcoming posts. In the meantime, a big thank you for all the messages, calls, gifts, cards and company. We are grateful for all the love sent to our little one on his second birthday!
