As we have explained before, the heating in China is controlled by the government. By that I mean that we don’t have a choice in when it gets turned on, how hot it gets, and when it will be turned off. A similar situation is true for summer time, but this case the school controls the cooling. For the past week and a half, it has started reaching over 30 degrees (86F) in Qingdao, and we are melting in our offices and classrooms but there is no air-conditioner available yet. Being in my 36th week of pregnancy, this can be really draining for me. I feel like I am melting from the inside out, so the best thing for me to do is simply sit absolutely still and try not to generate too much body heat. One of the guys in our office made the comment, “Oh don’t worry, it’s not just you… we are all feeling hot!” Haha, buddy – you have NO idea how much hotter you would feel carrying around a baby and tons of extra weight all day! It is becoming increasingly difficult to dress appropriately since I am trying to remain as modest as I can, when in fact I want to wear as little as possible. What makes matters worse is that the other Chinese women in my office don’t seem to sweat much at all. So while I have puddles of sweat all over me (including a very unattractive line of boob sweat going across my shirt), they are bone dry! FYI – even when I’m not pregnant, there is this difference between Chinese women and myself… but now that I’m pregnant the contrast is more so.
The crazy part is that this is only the beginning! The days will get much hotter, and the humidity will rise, and at the same time my belly could keep growing for about another 4 weeks! Carrying this extra weight and a 5+ pound baby around with me constantly is draining every bit of energy that I might have had. I can’t wait to get home after school so that I can be in our cool apartment (where we control our own air-conditioner). I think I deserve more ice cream to compensate for the fact that I feel like I am about to explode into flames! Who knew that being pregnant resulted in this much extra body heat!!!!!
