Great Gatsby 1920’s Gala│QISS
On Saturday evening we joined the staff, parents, and friends of the Qingdao No.1 International School of Shandong (QISS) for their annual year-end gala. This year it was held at the Shangri-La Hotel, in the downtown area of Qingdao. We have gone to a number of QISS events over the last couple of years. You might recognize this school name from some of our recent posts, like their International bazaar, and Halloween 5km Fun Run. We were thrilled when we heard about their 2016 Holiday Gala, and we quickly reserved tickets. This was a party we DID NOT WANT TO MISS! The theme this year: 1920’s Great Gatsby. Think feathers, pearls, long satan gloves, little black dresses, bowties, and slimline cigarette holders.
We met with friends, and joined with many more at our table and then on the dance floor, for a night of fun. It was so exciting dressing up, and heading to a fancy hotel. As we arrived at the Shangri-La, we were welcomed with bubbly and hors d’oeuvre served by ladies carrying circular platters around their bodies. There was a 1920’s style photo booth with props and accessories, a raffle table, and live lounge music playing. We stood in the foyer mingling, and enjoying a few drinks while all of the guests were arriving. Even before it started there was an air of elegance about this party, and it felt so good to be dressed up and out for the night.
Upon stepping into the dining hall, we were immediately impressed by the decor. Each table had large white feathers coming out of the middle of it’s centerpiece, and below that, inside a glass cylinder was a golden mask. So simple and yet so perfect! It felt as though we were attending a wedding or celebrity event, and we were all the stars of the show. Everyone at our table ended up having such a great time – the laughter never ended!
After dinner, a competitive Christmas game, a raffle and then a charity auction, we danced for about an hour. One hour could never be enough dancing, so when the party was over we all moved over to Q-Bar, which is a nightclub located inside the Shangri-La. Talk about convenience! Stay at the Shangri-La Hotel and you don’t even have to leave to leave the building, and face the cold, to have a “nice out on the town”.
At midnight we celebrated Paula’s birthday (the lovely lady to the left of the above picture) and then danced FOR HOURS!
It is probably safe to say that everyone had an AMAZING night, and we were all thrilled with the Shangri-La and all those at QISS who worked so hard to put this event together! What a night!
