This is the first Thanksgiving that Justin and I get to celebrate together in the States, surrounded by family and tons of delicious food!! As most of you know, I did not grow up with this tradition, so this is all new to me! This American holiday is usually celebrated with family or friends, and hopefully spent reflecting on all that we have to be thankful for in our lives.
Today many families will gather together and enjoy a family feast of turkey with all the trimmings. Sue has been cooking since early this morning, and she also helped me through making my very first Apple Pie last night (another item on our Bucket List for Fall).
For those that don’t know much about this holiday, here is a little background:
Thanksgiving is a national holiday primarliy celebrated in the United States and Canada. It is celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday of November in the US and on the second Monday of October in Canada. The reason for the earlier Thanksgiving in Canada is probably due to the earlier onset of winter in the North, because this ends the harvest season earlier. Due to the longstanding traditions of the holiday, the festivities often extend to the weekend that falls closest to the day it is celebrated.
The list of things that we are thankful for this Thanksgiving is endless, but here are a few:
Family ~ The ones far away, and the ones that we have just spent 5 months with. We appreciate this time with them very much. Friends ~ The ones that follow this blog, write, call and email. We are especially thankful for the ones who are far away but still love us so much. Our Bodies and Minds ~ It’s easy to forget that our bodies and minds are amazing things. We are thankful for how great we feel! Love ~ We feel love all around us. Being with family has been wonderful this year. We are immensely thankful for this. The Ability to Learn ~ Justin is doing so well at school. We can never forget how fortunate we are to study, learn, and make the most of our lives. Children ~ Not our own yet, but those that we come into contact with. I have been around babies for the last couple of weeks, and this brings me great joy! Almost everything they do brings a smile to my face. Perfect. Beautiful. Amazing. Our Health ~ We are able to walk, run, play, and be happy. This is a profound gift, and it should never be taken for granted. Disappointment ~ So that we can learn what matters most! Choices ~ Many people in this world do not have this, but Justin and I are blessed with so many choices. To stay or go, who we want to be around, where we want to travel, how we want to live, what we want to do… The possibilities are endless! Pets ~ Those morning cuddles, and the way they are ALWAYS happy to see us. Marriage ~ There are only 3 months left until we celebrate our love with family and friends. Food, Shelter, Talents, Dreams, Goals, Strengths, Career Opportunities, Travel, Second Chances, Faith, Happiness, Each Other…
And the opportunity to share in new traditions with new family!!
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!
