He Stood Still
A few years ago, my friend Heather did a blog post about here dog, Chara. She said she didn’t care that she was posting an obscene amount of pictures of her dog. No matter what anyone though, she was going to do it anyway! That’s how I feel about this post. Too many, very similar, pictures? YUP, totally! But in all honesty, they are to show a VERY huge moment for us. Eli… NEVER stands in one place for pictures. Taking pictures of him, with him looking at the camera, is hard work! Lately he has started to look at the camera more, and even sometimes reacts when I say, “Smiiiiiileee!”
95% of the time though, he couldn’t care less!
It’s not that he’s a very busy child, or that he runs around constantly. In fact, he is quite a chilled kid. He just doesn’t listen to requests! Most of the time, I feel like most of what I ask of him is completely unheard. And yes, when he was younger, we did wonder if he had a hearing impairment, especially because he wasn’t talking (and still barely isn’t). But he is listening, and he can hear us… he just has better things to do that stand around for pictures!
A couple of weeks ago, just before meeting some friends for lunch, we were walking along one of the busy downtown side streets. I saw a shaded wall, so I asked Eli to stand against the wall. Ordinarily we can’t even let go of his hand because he takes off like the wind. He has no idea that he is in China, where even the sidewalks have cars, motorbikes, and tractors zooming up and down them! I know that he will never stand where I place him, look at me, and smile for a picture – but with blind optimism, I try anyway!
Much to my amazement, he not only stood exactly where I told him to, he even looked at me, and then started “smiling”….
Not much of a smile. But he was trying, so I was happy.
At this point, I was doing a silent happy dance in my head… “He’s not moving!!”
It looked like he wanted to take off, but we told him to stay there. AND HE DID!
Then he started to pose, and do cute little dance moves.
At one point, he widened his legs and put one of his hands in his pocket.
Seriously, not only was he standing in one position, but he was actually POSING for the camera!
Unbelievable! I have contemplated using these pictures for his “BIG 3” update next month, but naively, I now assume that he will stand still for me next month. What a fool, right?
Eli has really been surprising us lately. I mean, we always thought that he was super cute, but listening to us has not been a strong suit of his. Lately, almost on a weekly basis, he has been making massive improvements in this area. Sometimes we look at each other – stunned – “Did he just do exactly what we told him to!?” hahaha…
We loved “the twos”, but THREE is going to be pretty freaking awesome!!
