Hillcrest Wine Estate is situated in Durbanville’s Tygerberg Hills, just half an hour from downtown Cape Town. As well as a specialising in wines, Hillcrest Estates also have an olive orchard. On site, you can dine at the Tuscan restaurant where the food is made from the local fresh produce.
It is the terrier of the farm’s vineyards, cooled by afternoon sea breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, which makes it one of the prime growing regions in the Western Cape. The estate’s well-drained soils have a good water retention capacity, which results in good quality grapes and consequently great wines.
Family and Friends
As a group, we really enjoyed this wine estate! The server was friendly and well-informed, so we got to ask many questions about the estate and the wines produced here.
Hillcrest Estate is a boutique winery which utilises between 40-50 tons of grapes per year. This equates to approximately 33,000 bottles of wine, evenly split between white and red wines, making Hillcrest wines unique and highly sought after.
Kamata, Green, and Black Olives for tasting, with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.
All produced at Hillcrest – Delicious!
Hillcrest Estate’s olive orchards were established in 1993 and have yielded award-winning olives and olive oils in its short lifetime. The view from the orchards, situated between 300 and 400 meters above sea level, sweeps across Table Bay and Robben Island and Table Mountain.
There is plenty shaded seating outside. The view from here is stunning especially during summer and it is impossible to pass up the opportunity to spend some time with friends and family, sipping fine wines in these beautiful surroundings.
The surrounding hills embrace the small restaurant, tucking it away, making it cosy and comfortable with a spectacular view. As an added bonus, we got to see the hints of yellow and orange on the vineyards as Autumn starts to show.

Maxine and I came to Hillcrest to do a tasting in 2009. We took the above picture of myself and similar ones of her silhouette. I can’t find the one of Maxine back in 2009 at the moment, but I now also have one of her holding Charles. When I have them both I will make them into one image and upload that. I am sure it will be a cute, “Then and Now” picture.

Another very pleasant wine tasting in Durbanville.
