Our Home: First Dinner. In this series, “Our Home”, we take you through the process of moving from our first Chinese apartment to the one that we are in now. Last week, in a post entitled “Our Home: The Realization”, I described the emotional process of arriving back at this apartment for the first time after our friends had left. We had bought almost all of their furniture, and we were basically taking over their home after their move to Austria. Once the emotions had settled, we began the process of sorting through everything. I spent a couple of days working through each room, deciding what to keep, and finding many surprises along the way. I kept sending pictures to McKenzie… It was somehow comforting and heartbreaking to share this process with her.
After a couple of days of Elijah and I heading over there during the day, I told Justin to meet us there one night after work. McKenzie and her husband had left everything that they didn’t need, so there was even food left in the fridge. We bought some fresh vegetables at the store downstairs (this was a huge excitement for us as our old apartment complex did not have many convenient stores within a short walking distance), and I prepared a delicious dinner. German sausages, stir-fried vegetables, cheese, bread and wine. As you can see, we drank the wine out of dessert bowls because our friends were not wine drinkers, so they left no wine glasses behind.
We had been living on the 24th floor for two years, so this view was much lower than what we were used to. When I was at the house during the daytime I could hear the school playing music, and watch the kids marching and raising the flag in the morning.
After our dinner we wanted to keep working since it was a Friday and Justin didn’t have to get up early for work the next day. We gave Elijah his first bath in our massive tub upstairs. He absolutely loved playing with all of the toys that McKenzie had left for him. As you can see, he is TINY in this bath. Such a funny thought when you think of how we bathed him in our old apartment which had only a shower. For a giggle check that out HERE.
Of course, there was already a crib and bedding in Elijah’s new room (seriously… they left EVERYTHING for us) so we bathed him and then put him to bed so that we could get back to work. This little man had been crawling around his new house, and he was dirty and exhausted.
Many many many happy memories made around this dining room table!
For the Klugs and now the Essers too!
