It’s Braai Season. The warm weather is on it’s way in, and we are in the mood to braai! We like to do it South African style, but having a wood fire is out of the question, so we have settled for some coals and a tiny little grill. You might remember that we had a Weber in our first Chinese apartment, but we also had a massive balcony, so we when we moved we sold that one. For weeks I have been telling Justin that although our current balcony is small, we can still get a braai going! We are probably NOT allowed to do this, so we knew that a smaller braai would be better, and if anyone knocked on the door we probably wouldn’t have answered. We are sure that fires are not allowed on balconies, buuuuuut this is China so you sort of do whatever you want and hope that no one complains. Our South African friend, Mariska, had yesterday off – she usually works all weekend – so she picked up a small grill and brought it over. We stocked up on meat, made a potato dish, garlic bread, and salad, and then enjoyed a wonderful braai. It warmed all our heart to be doing something that we all love, and miss, so very much!
While Justin cooked the meat outside we made the salads, and smoked some hookah. Elijah was playing in the lounge and watching movies. Mariska rescued two sweet puppies from a cardboard box behind a Chinese store, and since we she spending the weekend at our place, she brought them along. One of them was quite comfortable in Elijah’s Ergo carrier while Mariska prepared food… anything to be near Mommy-Mari!
Our braai was a greep success. In the past we struggled with the coal here, but yesterday everything turned out perfectly, and Justin cooked the meat to perfection!
What a great idea… we will be doing this a lot more in the coming weeks!
