I have recently received a number of questions about the juice fast that we did last June, so I thought that I would put some information together for those who have expressed an interest. I can’t believe that it has been a year since our 15 days of no food! We felt amazing after that experience, and because summer has made it’s way back to us again, I would love to do another juice fast. I find that summer is the easiest time to do a fast because the juices are best served chilled and somehow I manage to eat less during the hottest months. I think that is true for everyone – nothing better than snacking when it’s cold outside! Unfortunately, I am unable to do a complete fast now as I just recently had a baby (the little guy is only 4 weeks old tomorrow) and fasting is not recommended for breast-feeding mothers as the toxins released by your body during a fast make their way into the breast-milk and may be harmful to baby. Even though I will have to wait a few months, I still very much want to do another fast in the future and I encourage all of you to give it a try if you want to reboot your system.
We followed a juicing plan found on Reboot with Joe. There are a number of plans to choose from, so you can decide which one will work for you. These are the free ones (but the site also ‘Guided Reboots’ – 15 and 30 days – if you prefer to have a coach and a small, private group that helps you achieve your goals):
3 Day Quick Start (3 days of juicing only)
5 Day Jump into Juicing (5 days of juicing only)
10 Day Reboot Lite (10 days of eating and juicing)
15 Day Juicing Plus (5 days of eating and juicing + 10 days of only juicing)
You will be buying TONS of fruit and vegetables if you decide to follow one of these juicing plans, so you may find this SHOPPING LIST TEMPLATE useful.
Despite the fact that most vegetables are incredibly cheap here in China, we found that only the vegetables that were in season were budget-friendly. We also had trouble finding anything that wasn’t popular here, like kale, beets, and a few of the fruits on the list. I therefore recently went searching online for a more budget-friendly juicing plan, and I found a great site called “Natural Juice Junkie”. Check out that site, it has some very useful info for juice-fanatics – new and old. I was impressed with this Budget Juice Reboot Schedule (pdf version here) because all of the recommended juices are simple yet nutritious. For your convenience, see this day-by-day shopping list.
If you are interested but not quite convinced on the whole juicing thing, have a look at the results that Justin and I saw last year when we juiced for 15 days…

My brother, Richard, is also a juicing fan now and I’m so happy that he jumping on board and gave it a shot. He did so well and I am proud of him for giving it his all. He lost about 30 pounds in 17 days, and everyday he told me how amazing he felt! I was a little worried about Richard juicing since he is diabetic, but he stuck mainly to vegetables juices and got his sugar levels down to PERFECT!! I am excited for the day when we can do a juice fast together. Here is a picture of him back in 2008 and one of him now. He lost a lot of his weight when he found out that he was diabetic, and this recent juice fast helped him shed even more! Well done Rich!
That’s pretty motivating, isn’t it?
