While living and working in Korea, I met the LOVE OF MY LIFE. It just so happened that she was from South Africa. Never in my life would I have imagined that I would be in Africa, let alone the most beautiful country in the entire continent. And to top that off, Cape Town is the most beautiful city in South Africa. Therefore, I went to the most beautiful city in Africa! How awesome is that.
Here are the accounts of my first ever trip to Cape Town, South Africa. So my trip started off on a bus from Busan, Korea to Seoul. This bus took about 5.5 hours. I got to the airport early because I was so eager to be at my destination already. I was in store to change time zones 7 times and a total of 33 hours on buses, planes, and automobiles. I was not especially excited about the length of my traveling and since Catherine had just taken this same trip 2 weeks earlier I felt like I knew what to expect. My biggest desire was to arrive in Cape Town, well rested and not a zombie.
At the airport in Seoul. Of course Korea offered free wifi. I sent Catherine one last message before I would see her again. My first flight was from Seoul to Guangzhou, China. This flight would only be 4 hours. Not too bad.
From here in Guangzhou I was flying to Johannesburg, South Africa. This flight would be the longest part of the trip. 13 hour flight. I knew that I had to sleep as much as I could on this leg of the journey. To prepare for the flight I purchased some sleeping pills in Korea. They told me to take only one. So after boarding the flight I popped 3 and hoped that they worked. I closed my eyes and when I opened them, the plane was landing. Brillant!
I had a 3 hour layover in Johannesburg before flying to Cape Town. I decided to get a nice nutritious breakfast in before the flight.
Let’s get the trip over with!!!!
YAY!!!! I made it. My bag was one of the last ones to show up on the carousel. I picked up my bag, made a quick stop in the toilet to make sure I looked presentable and made my way down the hall.
I wish that I could explain the feelings that I felt as I was walking down this corridor. I was so nervous and excited that I couldn’t stop from shaking. I started taking a video so that I could remember this moment. Unfortunately, the video can’t be found. But It was awesome. Catherine and her parents were there waiting for me. As well as her Aunt Suzie and her two awesome daughters, Melissa and Maxine. I felt so special that all these people that I have never met in my life would come and meet me at the airport upon my arrival.
That day we stayed at Catherine’s parents house and had a braai (We grilled out). It was awesome. Amazing food and amazing people. Most of you that read this blog have heard stories about how funny her family is. And I am here to tell you that they are all true.
The next day we got a lift into town from Moose (Catherine’s Dad). We booked in a guesthouse in the city with plans to explore the city for a couple days.
Our room was cozy. Gotta love the convince of a all-in-one room.
Here is the view from our room’s window.
This is the Cape Town City Hall
After walking around a bit we went to the Castle of Good Hope. You can see more photos here.
Around many corners, you can find street markets. Above – Greenmarket Square.
Selling anything and everything somebody would ever want. And also things that no one wants. 😉
This is a famous pub in Cape Town – “The Purple Turtle”
We eventually made our way to Long Street. This is famous as a bohemian hang out and the street is lined with many book stores, various ethnic restaurants and bars. It has a diversified culture and attracts tourists form all over the world. It also has a number of youth hostels. Ours was, however, not on this street.
One of Catherine’s best friends, Samantha, worked at this restaurant, Mama Africa.
Inside Mama Africa.
The bar was amazing. It was a colorful snake that went from almost one side of the restaurant to the back. We sat with Samantha for a while until she absolutely had to get back to work. We decided to get some food and drinks from a nearby street and head back to the hostel for a party,
