On our first night in Thailand, January 19th, we made our way to one of Bangkok’s busiest areas to check into our hotel. We were still dressed in our warm layers since we had left the bitter cold of China that morning. There’s nothing better than being able to put down your heavy backpacks after traveling all day. We showered and then lay on the bed to rest… As I let my body relax, I suddenly felt a little flick inside my tummy. It was almost like a muscle twitch but seeing as I have never felt something like that in my belly – especially near my belly button – I noticed it, and wondered what it was. It didn’t happen again that night.
A week later I felt this same “flick”, and I once again thought that it was odd. Could this be little baby’s kicks starting to be felt?? I assumed not since online they say that you will feel butterflies, or “soft flutterings”, that they called “quickening”. What I had felt, twice by then, was nothing like that. It was a definite flick and there were not other sensations before or after it.
Fast-forward a few more days and I felt it again as we were lying on the beach. Three or four days later I was lying in bed, and I felt that same flick, but several of them, so I placed my hand on my belly… And I finally realized that it was baby kicking and I could feel him with my hand too! Excitedly I made justin place his hand on my belly and, very faintly, he was able to feel something. That was when I started to get excited – or should I say, ecstatic – each time I felt these little flicks inside my belly!! As the days went by I felt it more and more. But instead of the movements being separated by a week, they were separated by days, and then finally by only hours!! One evening while eating a burger – which coincidently is the only food I have been in love with since falling pregnant – baby kicked me multiple times while I was finishing my meal, I suspect because he loves beef burgers!! He usually only kicks at night and in the morning, but on that day I could feel him while I was eating.
Two days ago, on February 12th, I woke up and felt a small rythming twitching in my belly. I placed my hand on my stomach to feel where he was, and I noticed that these were not kicks. They were softer and definitely held a consistent rhythm. It on,y took me a minute or two to realise that ittle guy was hiccuping!! I couldn’t have been more happy to feel this incredible thing as I woke up that day. I woke Justin to tell him, thinking that he might think that I was crazy, but he was just as amazed.
What a blessing it is to be able to not only grow a baby inside my belly, but to also be able to feel him move and hiccup at only halfway through the pregnancy! There are no words to describe how much we are enjoying these new developments… Each one is truly amazing in its own way.
During our week 19 ultrasound in Bangkok , we found out that my placenta is attached to the anterior wall of my uterus (ie. on my front side). What that means is that baby is lying behind the placenta and it explains why I haven’t felt him at all until now, and also why I didn’t feel the initial “flutterings”. There are days were I don’t feel him at all, and on those days he is facing backwards so his arms and legs don’t touch my belly. I never would have known this from the scans that we get in China since they don’t explain anything and the papers they give us are in Chinese. In Bangkok I got a nice detailed summary of everything, and we really appreciate being able to read and understand all of it.
So there you have it – baby boy is moving around, kicking, and hiccuping… And mommy gets to feel it all. Each time I do I giggle loudly or at least smile the biggest smile!! Now all we need is one of these: Belly belt for dads, so that Justin can feel all these incredible little movements with me!!
This video really did bring tears to both my and Justin’s eyes… Take a look:
If anyone wants to sponsor us one of these, please do!
We would be so grateful!! Hehe!
