We did a bit of exploring while we were on Koh Phangan, and even though we really wanted to do this via motorbike, we decided against it since it could have been dangerous with the pregnancy. Instead we paid a songthaew driver to take us wherever we wanted to go. One area that we definitely wanted to check out while we were on this island was up on the north-western coast of Koh Phangan, Koh Ma. This tiny island is well-connected by a sandbar to Mae Haad beach on Koh Phangan.
We took a songthaew from Charm Beach Resort, on the southern part of Koh Phangan, to Mae Haad Beach. Our driver dropped us at the restaurant pictured below, he said that he would would return to pick us up at a time that worked for us. It kind of felt like we were in school again, and our dad was asking how long we would be, haha! We tried to estimate a time, and then said goodbye. We never saw him again – but then again, we might have just missed him and taken another songthaew. Who knows, but he seemed pretty genuine and we hadn’t prepaid him or anything.
While Justin lay in the sun relaxing, I took a stroll further into the island. I did not spot a single other person, so it was extreme peaceful and almost felt like I was all alone on a deserted island. Koh Ma is flanked by lush swaying papaya and coconut trees which give the island a very authentic Thai island feel.
Unlike the Haad Rin Beach which is notorious for full moon parties, Koh Ma Beach is a completely natural attraction that offers complete tranquility and peace. This is a great honeymoon spot – as we lay on the beach, we felt like there was no one for miles. Occasionally a person or two might pass by, but overall it felt like this island was completely ours.
Now that’s a view that I will never get tired of!
