Cape Town, South Africa
Wow… March is over, and we are 1/4 way through 2015 already. That thought just blows my mind! Already, it has been a busy year for us but the next couple of months should be pretty laid back. Time to recoup, get Elijah into a smooth routine (no international travel until summer), start preparing to move, catch up on a gazillion blog posts, and spend much needed quality with friends in Qingdao. Many of our closest friends will soon be gone, but for now, we continue to try and block that thought out! Since March is over and we haven’t really been that good at showing you what has been happening (except for back-dated posts), here is a look at our month of March.
Not to brag or anything, but our month started out a little something like this (above picture). That’s right – sunny days, chilling with a drink by the pool. NICE! You’ve read a lot about our trip to South Africa, and we have more on that coming your way soon. Eight days into March, and we were back in Qingdao, dressed a little something like this… (picture on the right). Oh my word, we love that little winter bear outfit of Elijah’s. We are so happy that it still fits him. It was not terribly cold when we got back to China, but due to the dramatic change in temperature, we definitely needed a few days to adjust. There were some really nice days, and even a couple of blossoms popping up here and there, but recently it got cold again. This might be the last wintery week though, as that is usually what happens. In the last week, we have experienced a lot of thick fog that comes over the city from the ocean. It is impossible to see out of our apartment windows, and the air has been chilly. It shouldn’t be too long before it is warm and sunny, and we can take advantage of one of the best seasons in China!
We have been doing a lot of hot pot at home. Mostly just the two of us, but occasionally we have people over to enjoy this meal with us. It is so simple and easy – except for the mass of dishes left afterwards – and relatively healthy if you don’t count the 3/4 jar of peanut butter that we use to make a dipping sauce! Oops!
With Elijah in bed by 6:30 (sometimes earlier) most nights, we have been trying to take advantage of this quality adult time, but the truth is that most night we are just plain exhausted. It is probably due to a combination of Justin getting back to work, our recent 6 week trip to South Africa, and the developmental stage/ sleep regression/
kill me now, that Elijah is currently going though. The poor little guy is just not wanting to sleep. We have tried various things, and it is all still a work in progress, but thankfully he is happier than he was a week ago. Being that, with babies, you might as well guess your way through the few months, we never can say for sure what might be wrong. Teeth? Developmental milestone coming up? A leap? Growth spurt? Stomach pain? Who knows. When things get chaotic – and they do – we try to keep it together and get through the stage. We are currently in one of those stages! But seriously, look at this face…
He’s still our happy little guy, but the above image pretty much represents the stage that he is in. The “Hot Mess” stage! Let’s just say that it has been our LEAST favourite month, and at 6:31pm almost everyday for the past two weeks, mommy pours a glass of wine. Call me crazy, but despite the current madness, I am still very excited for baby number two. I assumed that Justin would be reconsidering after nights when Elijah has us up 7-8 times after we have fallen asleep, but I was wrong and he is also looking forward to another miracle.
We have been noticing how much bigger Elijah’s hands and feet look. It makes us all mushy and sad. Our baby is growing too fast. Walking through H&M and seeing clothes in size 0-1 months, and then looking down at my son as he smiles back at me, almost makes me burst into tears in the middle of the store. Time is moving on too quickly!
We have been spending as much time as we can with The Klugs. Above you see Silas and Laney with baby boy. In fact, that is exactly what they call him, “baby boy”! The day that we moved to Qingdao, Laney was only 4 days old. Look at her now, no pants, crazy hair, and calling my son “baby boy”. Time with this family makes my heart happy.
Pigging out on chocolate cake!
Another birthday has come and gone, and mama is 31 years
old young. If we are going on how we feel, I still feel like I’m in my early 20’s, so it’s all good. My birthday was amazing. Link to those posts here: Dinner at The Diner22 and hilarious photos from the Photo Booth at Canvas. You see that box of amazingly cute chocolates above? Well, that almost disappeared within one sitting. There was that, and all the chocolate that Justin bought me. Let’s just say that since we returning, I’ve been on a major junk food streak! I’ll have to nip that in the butt soon!
Justin got a new haircut, which I really love (it is even better than the picture below shows) and after the next cut the style should become even more visible since the top needs to be longish. We have visited him at school a couple times this month. He’s on the cover of the high school’s latest brochure. I’m so proud of him and the way he has done things over the last month, he is really an incredible husband and father!
Slower cooker meals
We’ve been having a lot of take-out and meals with friends, so when possible I have been using the slow cooker. Soon we won’t want to eat hot meals like this anymore, so I might as well get my use out of this pot while I can. This mix came out well – ground beef, sweet potato, courgette, garlic, carrot, peas, sweetcorn and whatever spices seemed like they would go good in there!
Elijah and I have been out exploring a few times, and it’s really nice on days when we don’t need too many layers. No matter how I dress him, some old Chinese woman will inevitably comment on that fact that he is over/under-dressed. I have learnt to say “it doesn’t matter” in Chinese… that seems to work. The grocery store is packed with colourful fruits and vegetables, the skies are blue (minus the recent foggy days) and we hear birds tweeting. Oh happy days – spring is on it’s way!
What a month it has been! A bit of a roller-coaster… high highs and low lows, but we are healthy and happy, and that is all that matters. April brings with it Easter, more blues skies, blossoms on the trees, and hopefully, more outside time for Elijah and I.
April, here we come!
