Mürren to Birg│Over the course of the week, we have been showing you our journey from Interlaken all the way up Schilthorn. Yesterday we left off at a small mountain village, called Mürren. This is a traditional Walser mountain village in Bernese Oberland. It is located at an elevation of 1,650 m above sea level and is unreachable by public road. During both summer and winter tourists flock here to admire the picturesque little town, and the views of the three towering mountains: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Even though Mürren has a population of only 450 people, it has 2,000 hotel beds for all of those stopping in to visit. See more pictures from our time in Mürren here:

This post shows pictures only of the journey from Mürren up to Birg via the cable car system that runs between these two locations. Birg, at 2,684 meters high, is a summit of the Bernese Alps. It overlooks the valley of Lauterbrunnen, and lies on the east flank of the Schilthorn, just above the village of Mürren. In winter Birg is part of a popular ski route, and a number of cable car stations are therefore located on its summit. In order to get to the summit of Schilthorn, one has to pass through Birg. If you choose not to stop and get out at this station, you can change cable cars and continue up to Schilthorn. We did, however, stop to check out this cable car station. More on that in our next post. Yes, we sure did take a lot of pictures on this day in Switzerland!!! Do you blame us? This place was breathtaking from beginning to end, and at every stop along the way.
