Today is the National Day of the People’s Republic of China, and it is celebrated every year on October 1st. This year, people in China also enjoy a seven-day rest during the National holiday between October 1st and 7th. Like many other schools, they moved around some of the working days so that we could have a full 8 days free in a row. In theory this sounds great, and in the past when we have wanted to travel around China, we loved this idea… but this time round, we are left tired, overworked and desperately in need of this break. So ironically, instead of having a nice relaxing break, we feel that we NEED this time to recover!
Many people take tours around China during this vacation, and two years ago Justin and I traveled to Xi’an and Shanghai. You can read about that fantastic vacation via these links:
(As you can tell from the number of posts, our trip was PACKED with adventure and excitement)
Transportation and hotels are crowded around this time, but it is definitely worth it to hit the road and see more of this country. There is so much to see, so trying to avoid travel during national vacations would mean never traveling much at all. We like to seize these opportunities, but this year we will be staying at home to rest.
As a National Holiday gift to each of us at school, all teachers received two large packs of toilet paper, a large bottle of peanut oil, two bottles of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, AND a 100 RMB voucher for a local bakery. Seeing as we are both full-time teachers there, we received DOUBLE all of that. Crazy?!
Happy Holidays to all our friends in China.
Enjoy this rest time.
