We called it “our new years blessing” because with all the pollution we have been experiencing, seeing snow really felt special. After the flurry of snow, the skies cleared and we saw blue skies for the first time in a couple of weeks. It really was a blessing.
This Year, Justin had to work on New Years Eve. It didn’t matter too much, since we didn’t have any plans for the evening, but still, it would have been nice to have him home between Christmas and New Years Day. Elijah and I were going about a normal day – he was playing with some of his newest toys and I was laying on the floor next to him. I don’t know what made me look out the window, but I noticed a couple of white specks coming down. I jumped up and ran over to the window to see what it was. Much to my surprise, it had started to snow!! We barely ever see snow in December or January. If it does come, it comes in February, and during that time we are always off traveling or visiting our home countries. I eagerly called a few people and told them to look outside, but it seems that they were all hit by the snow before my side of town, because I had tons messages. I was happy to see that I wasn’t the only nerd jumping up and down like a kid! My friend, Elizabeth, and I were sending videos back and forth to each other – basically showing each other the same thing – but we were so excited that we didn’t know what else to do. haha.. we were over the moon!
I took Elijah to the window, and we watched the snow fall. It was so pretty! From just a few snowflakes, it turned what seemed like (although it wasn’t) a blizzard. We could barely see out of the window eventually. I dressed Elijah up as warm as I could and waited for the snow to stop. I wanted to take him out onto our balcony so that we could see the snow that had gathered. Turns out that although the snow had stopped, the wind had picked up! We got the balcony door open (against the force of the wind), but when I stepped outside I learned that Elijah hates wind! He gasps and doesn’t know how to breath. It was kind of cute because he’s eyes went super wide as soon as the wind touched his face. I didn’t want to be cruel so I quickly ran back inside. All that padding up for nothing! Oh well, at least we got to watch the pretty snow falling from a warm spot in our apartment.
Since we barely get much snow here, and I’m from South Africa, seeing snow fall (no matter how little), is still very exciting for me. Even Justin, who has seen way more snow, called me excitedly, saying “It’s snowing, It’s snowing!”
As you can see, it only gathered a little and then before long it was all gone.
The mountain behind our complex looked pretty with some snow on it.
It always looks amazing. When we move from here, I will miss this beautiful view.
In 3-4 weeks all three of us will be sitting out in the sun (where we’d much rather be), enjoying time with family and friends in the wonderful South Africa. Whether or not we will see anymore snow before we leave, we cannot say. The little bit of New Years Eve snow that we received might just be all that we get to see!
