Even before Elijah was born, I looked forward to starting some sort of “one year project” after his birth. I had a few ideas, but after baby comes things get busy, and it is hard to stick to anything. They say that it take a village to raise a child, but over here in China, it was just Justin and I. I worked on two projects – this is one of them. Every month for his first 12 months, I took a picture of Elijah on a grey blanket. It started out with me placing him on the blanket with all six letters of his name, but as the months went on, and he started to move more and more, it became clear that using only one letter was going to be a lot easier.
In his first year we traveled to the Philippines and South Africa, and we also moved house around when he turned one. Admittedly, taking these pictures was not always easy, but I’m glad that I did it. Lighting always seems to be an issue for me – it feels like I have been saying that since the beginning of time, so I REALLY should set aside some time to learn how to work my camera properly – but this project did come together nicely in the end. While I was in Texas, I created a very nice framed piece using these 12 pictures of Elijah. I will share that in an upcoming post. I hope to make something similar here in China, so that I can marvel (on a daily basis) at how much our son has already grown!
