Yesterday was a beautiful day for us. We took a huge step in our Christian faith and got baptised. There are a number of reasons that this was a big deal for us. Firstly, we got baptised in China – wow, of all places, in China! Secondly, we have wanted to do this many times in the last 3 years but we have never been in one place long enough to have the opportunity to do so. And thirdly, we did this together and while 7+ months pregnant!
We attended church on Sunday morning for our Easter Sunday service. The pastor, David, gave a thought-provoking message on salvation and the fact that Jesus died for our sins. It’s easy to remember that when life is going smoothly, but how much do we remember that God loves us when life is dealing us a rough hand? At the end of the service they announced that they were about to play three testimonies before we all went down to the hotel’s swimming pool for the baptism ceremony. I immediately started squirming in my seat. Honestly, I don’t think that I saw more than 20 seconds of it – I could barely look up! Justin watched both of them, and he looked so proud! At the end of my recording I said, “I couldn’t be more happy to be doing this today with my husband, and while seven months pregnant!” The whole church went “awww….”. haha, I went bright red!
We then went down to the swimming pool to change into other clothes. In the meantime almost everyone who had attended the service went to the pool to see us get baptized. We were shocked by the amount of people around the pool! Thankfully, at that point we were no longer nervous and instead, we were excited about getting baptised! Our friends, Zach and Heather had come from their church to meet us at the pool. Two other friends had come with us to church specifically for the Easter service and the baptism. The rest of our friends who were there attend our church every week, so they were all waiting together at the pool. It was nice to see so many familiar faces smiling over at us as they watched.
Praying before the Baptism
I love this photo of us praying before the baptism ceremony. Justin’s head on my shoulder and arm around me, and my hand on Baby E – So beautiful – Our special family baptism.
Justin got baptised and then helped momma-to-be into the pool. It wasn’t easy getting down the stairs and then finding the chair on the bottom of the pool with my big belly blocking my view of my feet, but somehow I managed. Then Justin crouched next to the pool to watch his pregnant wife being baptised… (Again, I love the picture you see below. Look at Justin’s face.)
Just before David baptised me, he said “This is a double baptism since Catherine is pregnant”, and again everyone standing around the pool went “awwww…”.
Prayers after the baptism
We prayed again after the baptism and then everyone sang “Amazing Grace”. The echo in the swimming pool area made all of our voices sound heavenly. This song always chokes me up, but besides that, this was an especially emotional moment!
Mary and Joseph, hehe!
Many people came over to congratulate us afterwards – lots of hugs and big smiles! We took a few photos by the pool, and then while we got changed back into our dry clothes, everyone went over to one of the hotel’s restaurants to have an Easter buffet lunch. We joined them as soon as we were all freshened up, and then filled our bellies with lots and lots of food!
We are thankful that we finally got to take this step of faith.
And that we got to do it as a family!
