Our Last German Feast
At the centre of the old city of Freiburg is the Münsterplatz (Cathedral Square), the city’s largest square. A farmers market is held here every day except Sundays. This is the site of Freiburg’s Münster, a gothic minster cathedral constructed of red sandstone, built between 1200 and 1530 and noted for its towering spire. It was right beside this gothic cathedral where we settled down to enjoy our final German feast.
Our adventure in German had been quite diverse, and very memorable, so we were sad to be saying goodbye. In an effort to check a few food boxes off our list – we decided to try a few dishes we had been told “not to miss”. We sat in the Cathedral Square, with an uninhibited view of Freiburg Minister. The sun was starting to set, and it cast a golden glow over everything. It was the perfect time of the day to sit down, grab a couple of cold beers, and breath in our last bit of Germany.
Black Forest Cake
HOW THE BLACK FOREST CAKE CAME TO BE
“The Black Forest (or Schwarzwald) is a region in southwestern Germany. The Black Forest of Germany is known for abundance of nature and diverse landscapes. It is not uncommon for this area to be called “the most beautiful place in Germany”.
However, the Black Forest Cake is not named after the Black Forest region of Germany but rather one of the ingredients in the cake. Schwarzwälderkirschtorte in German, means Black Forest Cherry Torte or Gateau. The cake consists of multiple layers of chocolate sponge cake, cherries, and whipped cream. The name comes from the liquor Kirschwasser, that is used both to soak the sponge cake and infused in the whipped cream. This brings a rich moist flavouring to the cake.
Some historians believe the cake, in fact, got its name from the traditional outfit that was worn by women in the Black Forest. This attire consisted of a black dress, white blouse, and a hat with red pom poms on top, all mimicking the chocolate shavings, cream, and cherries that top the cake.”
Spaghettieis is a popular German ice cream dish made to look like a plate of spaghetti. Vanilla ice cream is squeezed through a potato-ricer type of contraption, giving it the appearance of spaghetti. It is served over whipped cream. It give the “spaghetti” it’s “tomato sauce”, the ice cream is topped with strawberry sauce. Coconut flakes, grated almonds, or white chocolate shavings are sprinkled over the top, to represent parmesan cheese.

Since it was beginning to get dark, and we had to get to Colmar (where we would be spending the night), we jumped into our car and got back onto the road. Little man had thoroughly enjoyed his day, so he covered his head with one of my jackets and took a nap.
Off we went – Back on the road…
