Our Little Parrot
Following on from our previous post – A Band of Pirates – here is Elijah’s Halloween costume for 2017. We wanted his costume to tie in with ours, so I found a DIY parrot outfit to make at home. He really loves “flying around” lately, so I thought that he might enjoy having wings. When my mother left China, she left her sewing machine with me. I assumed I would take it out to make some simple pillows in the future. I never imagined that I would make something like this as my first sewing project. In fact, looking at it, you would assume that this outfit is quite complicated to make. The truth is, it was actually quite simple!
You can find the awesome pattern for making this costume here:
Sew an Easy Parrot Costume
My friend, Bethany, came over to show me how to set up and use the sewing machine. She makes bags and purses – so she’s definitely at pro-level compared to me. I didn’t even know how to load the thread into the machine (“load” — is that even the correct terminology?! I have no idea. I’m clueless about sewing!). After about an hour, I knew the basics and I was ready to give this parrot costume a shot.
I used an old hoodie since Eli had a flurry red one that looked perfect with the wings and tail. You could use whatever clothing you want though. The wings are detachable, but I lightly stitched the tail to the bottom of the back of the hoodie. I was going to attach the beak to the hood of the hoodie, but Eli liked holding it over his face, so I left it free fro him to do that.
I had the sweetest little helper while I was making this parrot outfit. He sat next to me, cutting felt, playing with stickers, and reading books. I just love his company so much. Here are some pictures from the DIY process…
Ready to go!
On Halloween, I went to help the PTA moms set up a candy table in the school gym. I took Eli along, and he ended up LOVING the festivities! The students all came into the gym to play games at various stations around the hall. Our little parrot walked around, munching on popcorn, joining the activities and making friends. He had such a great time!
<<QISS Halloween post coming soon>>
Just before we left the school, we remembered to take a family picture with Justin. I don’t know why, but this simple act is so easily forgotten by us in the madness of the festivities. Of course, Justin and I had some pictures of our outfits from the Saturday before, but we wanted a picture with our little parrot too!
Eli loved his wings and beak. He ran around shouting “skwwwwwak” and “Polly wants a cracker”. Too cute!
