Almost everyday at school I smell something good cooking in the kitchen. Besides the students and myself, there is only one other person there, and she prepares lunch for us while we study. After Science class it is lunch time, and most days I end up staying to eat with the kids. The meals are simple but delicious… however I always have to pop my head into the kitchen – “to say hi” – and try and see what’s on the stove, or in the oven.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love pork. I also realise that pig’s trotters are enjoyed in many countries around the world. Perhaps if you cut the meat up, put it into a dish with some vegetables or sauce, and never told me what I was eating, I wouldn’t care. However the thought of eating meat from a pig’s foot is a not very appealing to me.
This however was not what made me giggle when I saw lunch on this particular day. The funny part was the odd combination of Pig’s Feet and Pizza. When I asked what was for lunch (just to confirm), it really amused me how the response was given so frankly, “Today we will eat pig’s feet and pizza”.
And that right there is a reminder that we are living in China. Who knows – It may never cease to amaze me how different life is here. Fortunately, we don’t ever experience any pressure to eat things that we don’t want. Neither of us likes to eat things just to say that we did, but we do like to take pictures and show all of you. Our “adventure” lies more in doing things, than eating things.
If one of us were to convert to “adventurous eating” it would probably be me, certainly not my Justin. I assume that it would make for some very entertaining blog videos. Hmm… Who wants me to do it? If enough of you dare me to, I would definitely consider it. Maybe.
