Those of you that aren’t completely grossed have been asking – How did I eat it? What did it taste like? Did it make me feel sick when I ate it? Did it have any effect on me? Did Justin eat some of it? I’m writing this post to answer these questions and share my experience with you.
How did I eat it? As I explained in previous posts, my good friend Heather was at the hospital with us during Elijah’s birth. She helped me through the most horrific 2-3 minute long contractions, and then waited in our hospital room while we went to the delivery ward to deliver Eli. Once we returned (very shortly – awesome birth, thank you Eli!) she was there waiting in the room to see Elijah and then take my placenta home. We had brought a cooler box with us (on our crazy 2am cab ride to the hospital) and she was fully prepared for her part of the job. It was pretty amazing to later hear the stories about how her and her husband took the placenta home, and then clean and cut it up. She loves this kind of thing, so don’t worry, I didn’t ruin our friendship or anything. Trust me, she enjoyed it!
Heather cleaned the placenta and then cut it into cubes. She then divided it into ziplock bags, each containing three pieces. Her and Zachary came over to our apartment so that she could put the placenta into our freezer, and then while they were here they made me a placenta smoothie. That night they returned the to hospital to bring us dinner, and that was when I drank my first placenta smoothie. Heather also brought one for me to have the following day. I stored that in the refrigerator in our hospital room.
Every day after getting home from the hospital I consumed one placenta smoothie for breakfast. My favourite ingredients were these…
Did it have any effect on me? Who can really say for sure?! In my opinion, yes, it did help. I say that because I fought some bad anxiety in the first couple of weeks and I found that it was worse on days when I hadn’t made a smoothie yet. I feel like it helped my milk come in quickly (and tons of it), I stopped bleeding very early, I recovered extremely quickly, and I had so much energy that people couldn’t believe how energetic I was in the first couple of weeks of having Eli. So who knows… I might be wrong, but I think that it worked and I will do it again when I have baby number two.
Did Justin eat some of it? Many people have asked me this question, and the answer is NO! He wouldn’t take a sip, and there were days when he was very cautious to use the blender after me in case there were trace amounts of placenta left in it. Haha, even though it wasn’t for him, he was very supportive of my decision and he stood by me through it all.
