After running on a treadmill for months, it has been quite a challenge getting used to the road again. I do much prefer running outside, especially in South Africa where the weather, roads, and scenery are all so beautiful, but I am struggling a little. Despite the warmer temperatures, I would still rather be running like this, outside, than indoors. The hardest part has been remembering that I can’t leave my run until too late because running in the dark isn’t safe. In China, I have no time limits so I can hop onto my treadmill at any time of the day or night.
I have been taking Elijah with me on my runs, and even though I didn’t bring my jogging stroller, we are doing okay. My parents kindly organised all the baby furniture that Elijah could possibly need, including a stroller. It is not ideal for running, but at the same time, it isn’t impossible. Eli now falls asleep while we are out, so I am assuming that the ride isn’t too bumpy. I think it’s me that suffers more than him because I am not used to pushing something so heavy. My arms get quite a workout, but I figure that is not such a bad thing after all. Sometimes I stop at the park to play with Elijah – he quite likes the swings and we have never seen any in China, so I’m making the most of these park visits! So far, we have mainly stuck to the area immediately surrounding my parent’s house. These are relatively the same paths that I used to run when I was in high school. It has been fascinating to see how many things have, and have not, changed around the neighbourhood. Up until now I have been running alone, but now that Justin is here, we will be running together.
I miss running like this!
Here are some pictures from my last few runs…
