Every time we head up to Beijing, we stay in, or around, this area. Sanlitun is an area of the Chaoyang District in Beijing. It contains many popular bar streets and international stores. The area currently houses many bars and clubs popular with both expatriates and locals as well as international brand-name stores such as American Apparel, Apple Inc. and Adidas. It is here that one can fine the largest Adidas store in the world – of course, in China! In recent years, the Sanlitun Village shopping mall has become a popular destination for both expatriates and young Chinese. This is a wonderful area for a night time stroll, but the dining options are considerately more expensive than Qingdao. However, not surprisingly since there are a lot more, and much better options in Beijing. Sanlitun has become one of the most popular places in Beijing, especially for its nightlife, and attracts many foreign tourists. More than 40% of the bars in Beijing are located at Sanlitun area.
I particularly love the image below, which I found here, because it reminds me of the first time that Justin and I stumbled upon the Sanlitun area, back in 2013. We also remember this area pretty vividly since we almost spent an evening on the streets in Beijing, and this was the nicest area so we stuck closeby to the Sanlitun Village Mall.
Sanlitun was chosen as the area where foreign legations and embassies were to be reallocated in the late 1950s. What this means is that if we stay at a hotel in the Sanlitun area, then we merely have to walk a few blocks in the morning to get to both the South African and U.S. embassies.
