Our friend, Sasha, lived in Qingdao for a good few years, but has since moved up to Beijing. We were very pleased to hear that he was coming down to Qingdao, with his two sons, for a visit. We met for dinner at a restaurant only a couple of blocks from our new apartment. In fact, we had been running a few days before and noticed this restaurant. I made a mental note to tell Justin that I wanted to check this place out, but we hadn’t been back down that particular road again. When I realised that we were going to this same place to share a meal, I was very happy. Of course, I can’t say what the name of this place is – something I can’t pronounce in Chinese – but it is really worth a visit if you are in Qingdao (message us if you want more details on the location). There are numerous wooden tables and benches outside the restaurant, and plenty more seating inside. Being fans of outdoor dining, we were eager to sit outside and enjoy the warm summer night temperatures.
Sasha, who is fluent in Mandarin, helped Justin order a wonderful selection of dishes for the table. No Chinese dish is made to be eaten by itself, so the more variety ordered, the better the meal. They made sure to order a couple of spicy dishes and a couple that were not. We have to make sure little man has a few options too. No doubt he’ll be eating spicy food soon enough, but we don’t want to scare him off while he’s still so young. As you can see, the food was bursting with color… and equally bursting with flavour!
With Elijah getting bigger (ie. no longer just satisfied sitting in his stroller or on one of our laps), we prefer eating at restuarants with high chairs. Lately we find this a deal breaker when we are out looking for a place to eat. Eli is at the stage where he grabs at everything, so trying to eat with him on your lap means he’ll be grabbing your plate and everything in your hands. Thankfully, this place had baby chairs and Sasha had one set up and waiting at the table before we had even arrived.
This fried fish is a Qingdao speciality, and it was really tasty. In fact, we were very impressed with every dish that was brought to our table. Our dinner was made even better by the stunning sunset that slowly changed the clouds above us from white, to pink, to purple and blue.
