Checking out from Long Beach Villas
When we got back from our full day snorkel trip, we decided to join Douglas and Brittany and cross over to the east coast of peninsula Thailand. Ae, our guesthouse owner, managed to get our tickets booked and paid. She was even able to get us on the same bus and night ferry as D&B. The rain had moved over the western coast, so we thought that this was a good time to move somewhere new.
We checked out early and made our way to the beachside restaurant one more time to enjoy a quick breakfast and some iced coffee. These were tasty!!!
It was a pity to have to say goodbye to the adorable dogs. They had been so friendly!
A bus picked us all up and took us to a spot where we needed to then wait for a further bus. While there, the rain started to bucket down!! Staying at the guesthouse would have meant not swimming or doing anything beside eating in the restaurant, so we knew that we had left on the right day. Once we were picked up, we all got crammed into a tightly packed bus. The rain got heavier. Our bags were stacked on the top of the bus. There was a tarp over them however we were flung from side to side in the storm, and we wondered if the bags would all still be there when we got to our destination!
Late that night we arrived at a port where we were instructed to get on a ferry. I thought that there must be some sort of mistake. Surely there were talking about a different ferry!! The one they were pointing at looked like something used to transport containers, not one suitable for sleeping passengers. We didn’t know what to expect, but we ran through the rain and onto the HUGE ferry. We had to climb over piles of ropes and rusted metal! I kept thinking that this must be the wrong ferry! We followed a few people as they ran to the back and up some stairs. Justin had run ahead to claim a good spot for the four of us.
Inside were two levels of beds. There were blankets and pillows. We had thought that maybe we would have to sit up all night, so this was kind of a relief. In all other respects, we were quite surprised at this set up! Some girls came over to tell us not to leave our bags in the middle of the room because they knew others that had done this journey and lost money, and other valuables, from their backpacks while they slept. We put our bags by our heads and tried to settle in for a long night at sea.
We bought sandwiches and snacks to eat on the ferry.
Everyone fell asleep however I was wide awake!! As we got further into the ocean, the storm that was raging outside got worse and worse. The ferry was rocking from side to side and I wondered how no one was rolling across the room. Bags were sliding across the floor, and the door to the sleeping room kept opening and then slamming closed. I couldn’t understand why I was the only one awake. This was madness!! The ocean water started to hit the side of the ferry at such a height that I thought that we would capsize. The motion was making me very ill. From the window I could see water and then sky.. water then sky… There was no way I could keep my eyes on the horizon because it kept disappearing as the ferry tilted back and forth!! I decided to go to the toilet so I woke Justin. As we got up another girl jumped to her feet. She had been wanting to go too but was afraid to go alone. As we left the sleeping area, we were faced with the open sea at the back of the ferry… The waves were incredible!!! We held on for dear life, and made our way across the back of the ferry, and into the toilet area. The scary part was that if one of us fell overboard, no one would be able to do anything. I have never been in the middle of a storm that big.
Early the following morning we heard a horn sound. Everyone got up and started to disembark.
This was the first time that we got to see the ferry in the daylight.
The rain would not stop falling.
We knew roughly where our guesthouse was, however the rain was still pouring down so we looked for a cab to take us there. There was a steep hill and we didn’t feel like climbing it with our heavy backpacks after the rough night that we had just had.
We jumped on the back of a truck and he took us up the steep hill to our guesthouse. It was a truly amazing place with two bedrooms, kitchen, lounge, pool area, etc. We had decided to rent something really nice since there were four of us, and we wanted to spend some time together in a comfortable apartment. We need some luxury for a few nights!
More on Koh Tao coming soon…
