The Castle on a Hill │Bratislava Castle
A scenic walk from the Old Town of Bratislava takes you up to the castle on the hill. Bratislava Castle, the landmark overlooking the capital, was built in 9th century. The Castle is a symbol of the city, and it proudly stands on the hill above the Danube River. Eleven kings and eight queens were crowned in Bratislava in the past. No wonder that the castle is a popular part of excursions through the city. With a toddler in a stroller, some parts of the journey we had to carrying him up staircases, and burn a little more steam that others might – but it was still a pleasant climb up to the castle.
This massive rectangular building with four corner towers stands on an isolated rocky hill of the Little Carpathians in the middle of Bratislava. Because of its size and location, it has been a dominant feature of the city for centuries. The location of the castle provides excellent views of Bratislava, Austria and, on a clear day, parts of Hungary. It looks like something straight out of a children’s story book!
There were tons of people sitting out on the grassy area next to the castle. Some were playing music, others were sunbathing or having a bite to eat. Absolutely everyone was enjoying the gorgeous weather and peaceful surroundings. We sat down for a while, and let Eli do some exploring. Barefoot and free to roam the grass and rock features, he was in heaven!
Once we left the castle grounds, we went down a staircase and walk along the road which boarded the Danube river. Even from here, the views of the city and the river were beautiful. As we were walking, we spotted the UFO bridge and tower.
Below, This is the 7th largest hanging bridge in the world. There is a panoramic view of the whole city of Bratislava from the open-air observation deck on top of its UFO-shaped cupola.
Next up: A tasty traditional Slovakian lunch!
