With a few close friends leaving China this summer, I have been hearing a lot of, “I’m going to miss that”. Now, I know that we blog a lot about our life in China, but I don’t think that we blog about the tiniest details – the things that will forever remind us of the years that we have spent living in this country. So here’s a small little fact that always makes us laugh: In Winter, and even some of the Spring and Autumn months, ice cream is a BIG NO-NO in China. I don’t know how many times I have been gawked at while I eat my ice cream on the way home from the grocery store during the colder months. I like ice cream, and the fact that the air outside is cold too doesn’t mean that I’m not going to stop eating ice cream. This “Chinese rule” must be closely linked to the one that says that you CANNOT eat ice cream while you are pregnant. Who knows?! But let’s just say that when I was pregnant and eating an ice cream in February, I nearly caused a few old ladies to drop down dead with disgust. They point at me, then the ice cream and shake their heads in disagreement, mumbling in Chinese. Thankfully I don’t understand because I really don’t want to be told when I should or shouldn’t eat ice cream.
Since ice cream is not consumed in the colder months, those big ice cream refrigerators that line the outside of most convince stores, are converted into storage units, or better yet, they are sometimes used to store frozen seafood. Yup – that’s right – same fridge for raw seafood in winter and then for ice cream in the summer (and let’s be honest, we all know that they are not cleaning those fridges out). Moral of the story – make sure you don’t lick the wrapper!
So here we are at the end of May, and all the ice cream refrigerators have been restored to their original intended usage. They are filled to the brim with all kinds of weird and wacky ice creams. I’ll have to blog about that too – You won’t believe the ice cream choices that we have here. Corn ice cream anyone? We are happy that summer is almost here so we can now enjoy our ice cream without judgement (and without having to buy them off the blackmarket, just kidding, we can still find them some places)!
But wait for it….
We have just discovered that babies CANNOT eat ice cream,
And so the finger pointing and angry mumbling continues!
I guess we just can’t win.
When I’m out with little man, this is the type of ice cream that we share. It’s easy for him to hold and drink as it melts, but it doesn’t make a complete mess. It’s the kind that you break in half and it is filled with a yogurty-fruit mix.
Justin and Eli love this banana ice cream. These were pictures from the first time that they shared one of these, and as you can tell, Eli was surprised by the cold but definitely wanted more!
