End of The Romantic Road: Füssen, Germany
Füssen is an attractive Bavarian town at the foot of the mountains, with Lech River running through it. This town is the end (or the beginning, for some) of the Romantic Road tourist route and also makes a good stop-off point on the way along the German Alpine Road. Some visitors come to tour the castles, and then leave immediately afterwards. What a pity it is that many don’t get to explore this beautiful little town.
Füssen is small enough that a car is not really needed. We parked our car just outside the city center, and then got out to explore. We didn’t return to our car again until we were ready to leave. The town of Füssen is worth half a day’s exploration and, from here, you can easily escape from the crowds into a landscape of gentle hiking trails and Alpine vistas. There is a bus to the castles and the trains to Munich and Augsburg and the old town is easy enough to access by foot. You can walk to Neuschwanstein and Hochschwangau castles via some marked roads; travel times posted on the signboards are comfortable over-estimates.
Here are a few highlights from our stop in Füssen:
The clock tower of St. Mang’s Abbey
We started to walk up this hill to the Hohes Castle, but stopped at the top. We realized it was really hot, and that we didn’t have that much time. So we headed back down into the quaint town center. Nevertheless, the view of the Abbey was breathtaking!
We loved walking around all the cute little shops. We went into a tourist shop and almost bought Eli his own German lederhosen. A trip to Germany could be complete with your own personal lederhosen. Unfortunately, we didn’t find one that suited him, or our taste.
This was the main entrance to the St. Mang Abbey. We only stopped here because it was the closest public toilet, and Justin was on the lookout!
After walking around a bit more, we decided to have an wonderful gelato ice cream. Up to this point, on the trip, Justin and I had been sharing our ice cream with Elijah. Mostly because we are out all day, and we wants to avoid too much mess. But on this day Eli got his very first ice cream all to himself. He was sooo happy! He chose Hazelnut for his flavor.
Here is Justin playing around in the stocks. It was a lot easier to slide into it, than it was to get out of it. He needed me to help him to get out of it. I contemplated leaving him in there… but he was the driver, so I wouldn’t have got very far without him!
hehe – Just kidding, I’d never leave my love!
Füssen is at the end of the Romantic Road, coming from Augsburg as Bundesstraße 17 (B 17). From Munich take the Autobahn A 96, leave at Landsberg Ost and follow the B 17. We highly recommend a stop, even just for a few hours, in this gorgeous little town. If you have more time, there are many adventures to be had in the surrounding area – castles, biking, lakes and sailing.
Our next stop: A couple of quiet days in a wooden cabin on a lake
