My birthday came and went in the flash of an eye. It was supposed to be a “big birthday weekend”, but I ended up getting sick… and two weeks later I am only just recovering! I still feel a little weak and very tired. I was so sick that I didn’t look at these pictures until about a week after my actual birthday. If you know me well — then you will KNOW, that is a long time. You can read about The Flu that knocked me out for over a week here >> A Foggy Week │The Flu.
Anyway, here is a little summary of birthday, number THIRTY THREE!
Justin stayed home for my birthday. Isn’t he awesome!? This gave me some time to do a few extra things around the house, AND THEN… time to play with my birthday present! I recently borrowed a friend’s Sigma 35mm 1.4f Art lens to do a few photo shoots [Govoni Family of Four; Wild One Cake Smash and Claire, Autumn & Nai Nai ] and I FELL IN LOVE! I really did not expect Justin to go out and buy this lens as a gift for my birthday. I simply asked him to break into our friend’s apartment, and STEAL this lens while he was sleeping. I guess he decide to go with a safer option, and it was a great surprise!!1
Super duper happy with this gift! He’s a smart guy though because this lens is going to be used for many many more photo shoots… so he knew what he was doing! Somehow I went from stay-at-home mom, to the spouse making the big bucks.
*cough couch* — You can call me “Sugar Mama”!!
As usual, I turned to my number one subject for some practice shots. And, AS USUAL, he kept me on my toes. He barely ever looks at the camera, or even turns my way. The two pictures that you see here, with his eyes big and bright – they didn’t come easy!
My homeschooler came over for the day, and he spent a couple of hours in the kitchen with Justin. The two of them baked me a cake. From scratch! Justin knows I don’t really like icing, so he made a chocolate cake with plenty of cream in place of the sugary icing. Hmmmm…. I’ll have to share those pictures in another post. Dylan and Justin worked hard in the kitchen!
The end result was PERFECT!!!
During the afternoon we rested, watching movies and napping. Looking back, I realize now that I was already feeling my energy slowly depleting. At the time, I just thought that I was tired from a long week.
While we were getting ready to got to dinner, Eli followed me around, wearing my shoes and hat, and carrying a drum stick. He was ready to party! We hadn’t been on a date in a couple of month so we were pretty excited to be going out for dinner.
A Surprise Birthday Dinner Date
For dinner Justin surprised me with a new restaurant! I had heard about it but never been – and since Qingdao is pretty limited, I know he probably went out of his way to try and find some place new for us to check out. Dinner was great!
St. Partick’s Day – Birthday Drinks
With our bellies full, and our hearts happy, we headed out to meet some friends. Qingdao doesn’t really have many big events, but a couple of the bars were having some St. Patrick’s Day specials. A few friends met us at LPG for Irish Car bombs, zombies, and various other headache-inducing concoctions.
I really appreciated that these people came to wish me on my birthday! A big thank you to all of you!
These were so YUMMY!
Flaming cocktails called “Zombies”.
It’s not St. Patricks Day without a couple of Irish Car Bombs!
On the way home, our friends were hungry so we walked a couple of blocks with them to find some Chinese BBQ. Truthfully, we were already tired and wanting to go home, but we tagged along anyway. In the end it was only Justin and I eating the skewered meat. My aching feet weren’t too impressed with the blocks walked – living in China means that I barely ever wear high heels anymore. What a sad sad fact!
While we were in the taxi my throat started to feel really dry and sore. Little did I know, that was the start of an awful flu for me. What a bummer! On the bright side, I only really felt the effects on Sunday so we were still about to go to the Mardi Gras gala event on Saturday night. More on that in an upcoming post.
My birthday weekend wasn’t all that we had hoped it to be, but we still enjoyed it and we were together…. so that’s all that matters. Last year my birthday didn’t quite go to plan either, so we had a “Birthday Redo”. Ironically, I have been ill since my birthday so even if we wanted to sneak in an extra birthday celebration this year, we haven’t been able to. I am very grateful for my sweet husband who really did his best to make me feel loved on my special day!
