On the evening of Justin’s birthday, our friends, Zachary and Heather, came by to give Justin his birthday gift. Even though I already knew what he would be receiving, I didn’t breathe a hint of it to Justin because I wanted him to be surprised. Justin and Zachary were born three years and one day apart, so they almost share a birthday. We therefore had a gift for Zachary too, so this was more of a gift swap. That was, at least, what we told Justin… but the Mosby’s had a big surprise for my husband. As we sat around the table in the lounge, Zachary took out “his guitar” and told Justin that he wanted to sing him a song for his birthday. Zach then started to play and sing, but stopped abruptly and looked down at the guitar. A convincing look of confusion fell over his face. Heather and I had to hold back from giggling when Zachary looked up at Justin and said, “This isn’t my guitar”, and Justin – completely shocked – replied, “What? Who’s guitar is it?”
Zachary then stood up and handed the guitar over to Justin with a huge grin on his face.
“It’s yours. Happy Birthday Buddy!”
Justin’s jaw dropped. He has been wanting a guitar for a long time now. Zachary knew this and was really excited about giving Justin this guitar for his birthday. What a wonderful gift from the Mosbys!
We also gave Zachary his gift. The Mosby’s will be moving in a few months, so we tried to get Zach a “consumable gift”. With the help of Eli, we created a card (with sweet baby boy’s footprint on it for added cuteness), and put together a bag of some of Zachary’s favourite things.
After the gift exchange, we spent time chatting while Justin got comfortable with his guitar. Justin also received a number of guitar accessories so he was pretty excited to look through everything.
This was a wonderful surprise from the Mosbys. Justin was completely shocked, but thankful for this thoughtful gift. We appreciate it very much, especially since it’s a gift that will “keep on giving”. Perhaps one day Justin will be teaching Elijah how to play a guitar.
As I mentioned in a previous post – What? No Surprise this Year!? – I always try to do something special for my husband’s birthday. As far as Justin knew, the Mosby’s were coming over for the gift exchange, and then we were going to have a quiet evening together. We were set to fly off to the Philippines early the following morning, we hadn’t finished packing yet, and Justin was tired after an extra long week at work. Buuuuuut, I had secretly planned something for Justin. He just didn’t know it yet. More on that coming soon…
